2013 is an Election Year in the City of Atlanta

Atlanta City Council returns from winter recess next week with new 2013 committee assignments.

It’s a new year and an election year to boot in Georgia’s capital as the City of Atlanta General Election will be held on November 5, 2013 and any required General Run-off Election will be held on December 4, 2013.

This past November, Mayor Kasim Reed announced he would run for re-election in 2013 and would not be seeking a higher office in Washington D.C.

Most councilmembers are expected to run in 2013. In a previous version of this article it was reported that District 1 City Councilwoman Carla Smith would not seek re-election, but that is not correct. Patch regrets the error and has made the appropriate edit.

Last July, State Rep. Ralph Long (D-Atlanta) lost to fellow incumbent Simone Bell (D-Atlanta) in the race for the Georgia House District 58 seat that includes portions of Midtown. Now it appears Long is preparing himself for a run for a city council seat as Atlanta Progressive News reports here.

But there’s much to be done before the election rolls around in more than 10 months. The next full Atlanta City Council meeting following the winter recess will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, January 7, 2013 in the Council Chamber, Atlanta City Hall, (Second Floor) 55 Trinity Avenue. The Committee on Council will meet at 11:15 a.m. on January 7 in Committee Room No. 2.

When the council convenes next week, there will be seven standing committees: Finance/Executive, Public Safety & Legal Administration, City Utilities, Committee on Council, Zoning, Transportation and the Community Development and Human Resources Committee. All committees are comprised of members of the Atlanta City Council.

Atlanta City Council President Ceasar C. Mitchell announced last month the committee assignments for the coming legislative year.

“I am extremely proud of the Council’s work over the past year” said Mitchell in a news release. “We have tackled some important issues and have moved the City forward. I look forward to even greater accomplishments in 2013.”

The information above re me not seeking re-election is erroneous. I have every intention of running again this year (2013). Carla Smith

Please get out the vote this year, and remember the dramatic rise in violent crime in and around Midtown, Va-hi, and other areas. Also, please remember the 52% pay raise the council gave themselves in this economy, as well as the criminal Park Atlanta fiasco. Also please check each councilperson's attendance record at the meetings. These people think they are untouchable and answerable to us.
Let's prove them wrong. Get out the vote in 2013!
