Georgia Tech's former basketball home, Alexander Memorial Coliseum, is on its way to becoming The Hank McCamish Pavilion.
Construction on the approximately $40 million project began in May. About 250 workers have demolished most of the old basketball complex to make room for the newer 156,000-square-foot pavilion (See detailed renderings of the new structure).
McCamish Pavilion will seat around 8,900 fans, about 200 seats less than before. But, with the new design, seats will be closer to the action.

Other features include an open concourse, a center-hung scoreboard and premium seating with a sports bar atmosphere.
The new complex is being built to LEED Gold Certification standards, which means the building will employ sustainable practices. For example, water collected from the roof will be stored in underground cisterns for irrigation purposes.

The project should be complete in October 2012. Until then, Georgia Tech games are being held at Philips Arena and the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
The project is largely funded through philanthropic donations. Whiting-Turner Contracting Company is leading the construction.
