Atlanta Contemporary Art Center Plans Renovation

The westside's ACAC will close public access to the indoor facility in June and hopes to have renovations completed in order to unveil to the public at the fall exhibitions opening on Oct. 11, 2013.

Atlanta Contemporary Art Center (ACAC) is marking its 40th anniversary in 2013 with a capital campaign and plans for a renovation of key spaces to increase the visibility and vitality of the institution and to better serve its constituents.

ACAC, located at 535 Means Street on the westside, is a non-profit, non-collecting institution dedicated to the creation, presentation and advancement of contemporary art by emerging and established artists. ACAC creates a diverse cultural landscape for artists, arts professionals, and the art-interested public through its exhibitions, educational programming, and studio artist program.

Dating back to the 1920s, the 30,000 square foot warehouse complex on Means St. has housed ACAC since 1989. Recent strategic planning by ACAC’s staff and Board of Directors has resulted in a commitment to an improved facility, and the engagement of Atlanta architectural firm BLDGS to create an updated and more efficient design, allowing for increased functionality, visual clarity, and overall aesthetic enhancements.

“This $500,000 renovation in ACAC’s 40th anniversary year is an important step in the evolution of the Center," said ACAC Board president Tim Schrager in a news release. "I’m very excited about the contributions that have already been made by the WISH Foundation, Tull Foundation, Rich Foundation, and the Massey Charitable Trust, and appreciate the numerous individuals, foundations, and businesses that are helping us to successfully complete this capital campaign. The transformed facility will be better equipped to house all of the exciting exhibitions and programs that ACAC offers. I have no doubt that the Atlanta community will be thrilled with what we are doing.”

ACAC will close public access to the indoor facility once the spring exhibitions close on June 15, 2013. Outdoor programing and event rentals will continue throughout the summer, with the renovation to be complete by the end of September 2013. The improved ACAC will be unveiled to the public at the fall exhibitions opening on Oct. 11, 2013.
