December 21, 2012: The End of the World? Experts Think Not

Here's what scholars and scientists are saying about the Dec. 21, 2012, Doomsday prophesies, the end of the Mayan calendar and their potential impact.

Don’t make any rash decisions: Experts say 12/21/12 is going to be just another typical winter solstice.

Killer solar flares aren’t expected. Another planet isn’t on a collision course with ours. And, despite the plans for "end of days" parties in Northeast Georgia and elsewhere, the Mayan “long count calendar” ending on this date has no real significance – they had to end it somewhere!

What is All the Fuss About?

There are a number of theories and predictions that call for earth’s demise on Dec. 21, 2012. They include:

  • The ending of the Mayan calendar. The Mayans, according to a Sarasota Patch article, kept three separate calendars. The “long calendar” ends on Dec. 21. Some say this constitutes a Doomsday prediction; many do not.
  • Nostradamus. That famed French seer from the 1500s has been credited with predicting several end-of-the-world scenarios that some believe will take place in 2012. The website December212012.com points to the potential sparking of World War III on this date.
  • The collision of Earth and the supposed planet Nibiru. This supposed space catastrophe was initially predicted to strike in 2003. The planet in question was supposedly discovered by the Sumerians, according to NASA. When the world didn’t end in 2003, the date was moved to December 2012 for the deadly collision with earth.

What are the Experts Saying?

The intrigue created by multiple end-of-the-world predictions has made many scholars and even NASA stand up to make statements debunking the claims. From professors at Tampa Bay’s own New College to the scientific minds at NASA, they’re all saying the same thing: Go ahead and pay that mortgage bill and wrap those holiday presents.

In regard to the ending of the Mayan calendar, New College’s Gabrielle Vail says this, according to Sarasota Patch:

There are many misconceptions about the Mayans. If you look at their calendar alone, the Mayans kept three calendars. The one that has prompted the end of the world predictions was their "long count calendar" — a 5,125 year calendar. The calendar began August 11, 3114 B.C. and ends Dec. 21, 2012.

She said the Mayans wrote about dates beyond Dec. 21, 2012 "well, well into the future, trillions of years." They also wrote about dates before the 5,125 year calendar began.

Here’s what NASA has to say about all of the collective Doomsday prophesies:

The world will not end in 2012. Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012.

Why do you think people get so caught up in end-of-the-world prophesies? Tell us in the comments below.

The lord oh mighty above all things created the heavens and the earth and in the bible it tells us to live as we live our lives normally all the way until the last second and to not believe any one because only God knows the exact date. Every one needs to calm down and trust in God and to stop trying to take things into there own hands.

God was created so people had something to get them through the rough times he is a religous belief or ( hope)

Hey Jake, good news man....God does exist! He loves you even though you don't believe in Him. I pray that someday in the near future you will open your heart and accept Him in your life. All the bad things, like Cancer, Viruses, Bacteria, Fungi, affect us humans, because we have gone against nature and tampered with what we eat. Its all human related. God did not mean it to be like this. He loves us so much that he sent his son Jesus Christ to be the perfect sacrifice in order for us to have the hope of Salvation and Eternal Life. Wouldn't you like to live forever? You can and its simple all you have to do is Believe,Trust and Obey Him.

I know God is real and he does exists!!! What man that you know, could have created all these things that you see everyday??? The sun, the moon, water, trees, air, humans, or better yet, the 1st 2 humans. If you can show me a man that can do that, then just maybe you can change my mind!!!

Jake, if your premise is true, that God was created just so we could get through the rough times, what about those of us who worship and love and adore Him in the great times, and we know His love and feel His presence? He's an everyday God, not someone we turn to when times are hard. But you would ONLY know this if you come over to this side, otherwise you'll stay in darkness over there. You'll only ever know that God exists if you take that leap of faith and invite Him in. I dare say that after then, He has some proving to do to you then. And He does. That's why those of us to know Him still worship Him even when things look bad: because He's shown Himself faithful to us even amid tragedies like cancer, desease, hurt, and pain. He's here. He's not mad at you Jake. Take the jump to get to know Him. He loves you so much He created you a human. He could have made you a roach.

Well, with all said and done here is the truth: The 2nd coming of our Lord Jesus is imperative & at hand. Let all who hear this, who are serious about life get ready & help the rest of the humankind be ready! The date belongs only to God, the ancient of days. It could even be the 21st December, but it won't be this time around. Know this though, it is closer than we all think! (Mandlenkosi Mahlangu. MTC)

I can assure you that those innocent life's that have been lost are now in God's care and in a better a safer place than here on Earth.Remember God has given mankind free will and eventhough at times it may seem as though God should have prevented this terrible massacre, it is not in our place to question God's actions. I do feel alot of sorrow for all the families that have lost their children, my sympathy goes to all the families of these children. Their great hope is that they will be united again in the Future, provided that they accept and obey God, regardless of what religious group they may belong to.

Here we have the yin yang. Half good, half evil. Hope vs hopelessness. Life vs death. Health vs sickness. Joy vs depression. Wisdom vs foolishness. Polar opposite. Positive and negative. God vs satan

It is funny how it appears that atheists are so quick to jam all this non sense about how they believe God isn't real because of physical limitations and innocent people dying...it is almost funny in a sense because obviously if there is a God ( and I firmly believe there is) He would not be subject to explaining Hinself to sinful humans, nor be limited by the same physical restrictions as us. Also, if you do not want people "cramming" their religion, then simply ignore them and live your life. It seems atheism is the modern troll of society.

Josh, its is ignorance of who God really is, ignorance of the love He has for us and what His promise of Salvation and Eternal Life, once we Believe in Him and in His Son Jesus Christ, who died for us over 2000 years ago, so that we can have eternal life. It is ignorance and non acceptance of this truth that make people become athiests. Also, they are an instrument of the Prince of Darknes,Satan, than roams the world and is more amore evident as we come closer to the return of Jesus Christ. You don't have to be a religious leader or fanatic to see all the evil, sickness, poverty, crime, war, etc. that surround us. Likewise, it is not fair to blame God for all of this!

@Jake! Wow,I feel Sorry for you. You living your life not believing in God,What is your belief? I tell you this; God does exist. He is living God! I challenge you to open your heart to him and pray for your family and yourself, asked him to humble your heart. Let me tell you this,I was studying for an test, overwhelmed by it,so I prayed asking God for guidance and concentration asking him to bless me to pass. I did! I failed in one subject the others I did good on,prayer works. There's power in prayer and there is and always will be a God. So,for you I pray for people like you everyday, for you are lost in the world, you letting whatever happens in the world destroy your faith. Like I said ,I challenge you to believe and trust in him and you see how amazing he is. God will make you liar. He's in control!!!

Do not the Unbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together (as one unit of Creation), before We clove them asunder? We made from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?

And We have set on the earth mountains standing firm, lest it should shake with them and We have made therein broad highways (between mountains) for them to pass through: that they may receive guidance.

And We have made the heavens as a canopy well-guarded: Yet do they turn away from the Signs which these things (point to)!

It is He Who created the Night and the Day, and the sun and the moon: all (the celestial bodies) swim along each in its rounded course.

We granted not to any man before thee permanent life (here): if then thou shouldst die would they live permanently?

Every soul shall have a taste of death: and We test you by evil and by good by way of trial: to Us must ye return.

I don't believe that December 21 will be the end of the world. I think that is too predictable. But, I do think that a lot of people believe it is the end - with that being said, everyone should be be careful. Obviously there are some nut cases out there. I think that everyone should be thankful for each and every day we are given, they truly are a gift.

Nothing at all truly exists. Things only exist because we believe they exist. Things are only what they are because we named them so. Money only has value because we believe it does. Monarchs only had power because we believed they did. I could say I have a dog named goober, well goober only exists if you believe he does. His name is goober because I named him, he is a dog because i called him a dog. The same goes with anything else nothing and nobody truely exist in this world everyting is just a perception. I dont have a dog named goober by the way, but in your mind since you believed it, that dog existed for that few moments until i told you otherwise.

Everything exists retard money has value because we make it have value your dog goober never existed because you don't have him. And dogs are dogs because we named them dogs if we change the name of the animal it still exists it just has a different name now that's proposterous that you would say anything you said you should lea e this site now and don't come back because of how stupid you sound. We name things so they are able to be described or talked about if I named a skateboard sneezteble it would still exist it would just have a different name MY POINT IS EVERYTHING EXISTS AND YOUR REFERING TO EVERYTHING AS HUMANS IMAGINATING THEM, AM I IMAGINING THAT MY PHONE IS BEING HELD IF IT DIDN'T EXIST BUT IN MY MIND THEN ITWOULD BE ABLE TO DISAPEAR AT TBE BLINK OF AN EYE

Its one of the other god and science don't work together science has been proven and is clearly real and on the other hand there's a man living in heaven, a world where you live on forever with all dead people, but really you just rot in the ground and god didn't use science that contadicts the theory of creationism ( if it were real) so I ask once again for one proveable fact that he exists , if he did why wouldnt he show himself

If there was a god why would he allow the 22 children to be shot in the sandy hop shooting, why would allow such disatsters that destroy his people HE IS JUST LIKE AN ADULT SANTA CLAUS, all he is is something made up for people to belief in so life and dying later in life has a purpose he was created by a man that was Jewish why would you follow a bible that is based off a Jewish person they believe in a different god which leads to my other point if god existed why would everyone believe in different gods and religons if god was real everyone would follow him. I could make up my own religion and do you think scientology is real its just as real as god or Santa or the Easter bunny HOPE TO GET YOU THROUGH LIFE

Look, this is my philosophy. How can there be a God who is almighty and loving when there is so much suffering to innocent people in the world? Also, isn't it ironic that the bible was written during a time where the most powerful people were straight, white, men? Christians preach hate towards Homosexuals and the Bible favors white men. Also, the Bible alludes towards witches (fictional supernatural creatures) and tells fictional stories (Moses did not actually part the sea and Noah's Ark did not exist). So why does the "god" that this book that was written 3000 years ago and paraphrased several times by white male "educated" Europeans about really exist? And I hate to break it to the guy saying that things exist only because we believe it so, but that is complete bullshit. Look, I can say I have a dog, which is true, but let's pretend I dont. I say I have a dog, that would be a lie. Im pretending. If I really do have a dog, it exists. I can see it, I can touch it, I can play with it, etc. It exists, it is real. Imaginary things like monsters for example are fictional and are made up. Anyway, the world isn't ending, simple as that.

God is the only to salvation. God made the earth perfect, but the will and nature of man has messed it up. God does get angry when people turn their backs on him and he has destroyed every living creature once already (see Noah). I believe the more society pushes away from god, the more he will push away from us...just as we gain comfort with not even stating his name in the CHRISTMAS season, we act surprised when bad things happen. god does love you but that doesnt mean everything is hunky dory. Its called faith. Its what sets apart God from his creations. Merry Christmas everyone!
