Tuesday Morning Armed Pedestrian Robbery Near 14th Street

The suspects brandished handguns, and stole one of the victim's car keys, cell phone and purse.

Two women and an infant were robbed at gunpoint while sitting in their car in Midtown early Tuesday morning.

According to Atlanta Police Officer Carlos Campos, the victims were sitting in a Mercedes that was “having some sort of mechanical problems” near the intersection of Holly and 14th streets when two male suspects approached the vehicle.

Both suspects brandished guns and took one of the victim’s purse, cell phone and car keys before fleeing on foot south on Holly before continuing east on 14th.

Police officers combed the area in search of the suspects, but were unsuccessful in locating them.

The stolen cellphone did not have any tracking capabilities according to Campos. The suspects were described by the victims as black, being in their early 20s and having dreadlocks.

I would just like to point out that this incident did not occur "near Georgia Tech" anymore than it occurred "near Atlantic Station" (which it was closer to), "in Midtown" or "in Home Park."

Time to do stop and frisk like in NYC. All these thugs have weapons yet none seem to have cars. Therefore, they are walking around Midtown and elsewhere packin' heat. Ok then, stop and frisk.

Last year APD did Operation Summer Heat and set up prostitute stings on Cypress Street 75 to100 arrests were made. May I suggest Operation Packing Heat. It's only a matter of time before a thugs loose trigger finger will snuff an innocent Midtowner.

After that prostitute sting you mentioned, they started coming back a few weeks later. I walked up to and APD officer standing by the Midtown MARTA station and said, "Hey, the prostitues are back". He looked right at me and said, "Nothing I can do about it" and did nothing. As discouraging as that was I've called 911 many times when the prostitutes and dope boys start hanging out at Cypress and 8th.

It is up to the citizens to report thugs in your neighborhood. Call 911 whenever you see them in Midtown or whatever neighborhood.

It will never happen here. APD is led by a guy who spent his entire career in ATL. You can have a guy from a podunk PD try to solve big city issues. APD needs leadership who have spent a considerable amount of time leading a big city department.

The second issue with APD is that one third of the force has less than 4 years on the job. Those rookies were trained by other rookies. APD requires less than 5 months of formal training and 4 months of field training. On the other hand, LAPD has 6 months of formal training and an entire year of field training supervised by an senior officer with no less than 10 years on the job. APD needs to increase the training standards if they're going to produce a well trained work force. Otherwise, an untrained patrol division will be as effective as hiring Barton Security to protect the city.

Thanks, Scott. We have corrected that mistake and regret the error.

What are you people complaining about?

The mayor hired 1000 more police officers (in between gigs on Meet the Press) and crime is practically non-existent in the City. Don't you read the press releases? This type of stuff does not occur in the 'Sanitized for Your Protection' city of ATL!

Pay no attention to these malicious reports of iPhone-thirsty youth roaming the streets in search of innocent victims. It DOES NOT happen in our fair city I tell you! Just ask one of the members of Hizzoner's 45-person PR team. They'll set you straight.

Now let's get back to some 'Best of' lists and the latest cupcake store opening report.
