FBI Search Tech Freshman In Cyber Attack Investigation

Federal agents yesterday served a search warrant at the dorm room of a Georgia Tech freshman in connection with an international investigation called Operation Payback.

Federal agents Thursday morning searched a Georgia Tech dorm room in connection with an international investigation into recent cyber attacks, according an article in the university’s newspaper “Technique.”

Yesterday around 7 a.m., the Federal Bureau of Investigation served a search warrant at the dorm room of Tech freshman Zhiwei Chen, the “Technique” reports.

The warrant was one of more than 40 search warrants the FBI executed yesterday in the ongoing investigation “Operation Payback,” which seeks those responsible for a recent campaign of cyber attacks against the websites of companies that cut off money to the controversial website WikiLeaks.

The FBI said in a Jan. 27 release that "a group calling itself 'Anonymous' has claimed responsibility for the attacks, saying they conducted them in protest of the companies’ and organizations’ actions." The attacks were facilitated by software tools that could be downloaded from the Internet. "The victims included major U.S. companies across several industries," the release said.

According to news reports, Chen has become a person of interest to the FBI in the investigation. During the search yesterday, agents confiscated many of Chen’s electronic devices, Chen told 11Alive. According to the search warrant, FBI agents were looking for evidence of cyber attacks on the websites of companies such as PayPal, Mastercard, Visa and Bank of America.

Chen told 11Alive that he was not involved in the cyber attacks.
