Portable Classrooms Coming to Inman Middle

Final proposal will be presented to the board of education on Tuesday

A grade six academy at Cook Elementary School is off the table — for now.

In his final proposal, Superintendent Erroll B. Davis said portable classrooms will be installed at Inman Middle School for the 2012-2013 school year to addresses capacity issues.

He said this will give “time to plan for any needed transitions,” which parents from the Inman cluster have actively advocated for.

But the sixth grade academy for Inman Middle that was proposed to be built at Cook Elementary on Memorial Drive is still on the table for the future.

“Inman has the former Cook facility available to use as a sixth grade academy while the enrollment numbers are assessed and a long-term solution is developed and implemented,” Davis wrote in his final proposal.

Cook Elementary is one of 10 schools proposed for closure and Centennial Place Elementary School will take on some students from Cook. According to the final proposal, Centennial Place, located at 531 Luckie Street, will also take on some students from Northside Drive’s Bethune Elementary School.

Davis will formally present his plan to the board of education on Tuesday, April 10, at a meeting at Jackson High School.

The board is expected to vote on the plan during Tuesday’s session.

It's nice to see some sense for a change and not building another school when it's not needed. The trailers should work fine for now or a move to Cook for the 6th grade academy in the near future. APS just can't afford to waste money on building a new middle school when they were options on the table. This is a good move that helps the problem now.
