Man shot, killed outside Ponce Ave apartments

Man believed to be in his early 20s was shot Monday near complex next to Ponce City Market development

Update: 1 p.m.: The victim has been identified as 20-year-old Lee Lowery.

Original story: A man who Atlanta police say was shot in the breezeway of a Ponce de Leon Avenue apartment complex near Midtown has died as a result of "at least one" gunshot wound.

According to Atlanta Police Department spokesman John Chafee, officers were called to the Ford Factory Lofts, located in the Poncey-Highland neighborhood next to the Ponce City Market development, around 5 p.m.

The man, who appeared to be in his early 20s and has not been identified, was originally transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in “extremely critical condition.”

The apartments entrance shares the same parking lot that contains the local landmark Kroger grocery store, which has a not-so-endearing reputation due in part to a murder that took place in the parking lot a decade ago.

On Tuesday morning, several Ford Factory Lofts residents making way to their vehicles confirmed to Patch that the breezeway pictured with this article is where the shooting occurred. One resident pointed in the direction of the front rightside of the breezeway as to where the incident was concentrated. Another woman said there was "lots of blood" and "it smelled."

Anyone with information on this shooting is asked to contact Atlanta Police Homicide Investigators at 404-546-4235 or Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477.

No it's not in Midtown (capital M by the way), but NEAR Midtown as the article said...

Hi John, as the article reads, it's "near Midtown." The apartments appear to be just within the Poncey-Highland neighborhood boundary, which is now reflected in the story. Thanks. http://www.ponceyhighland.com/

John--you realize you can't get HIV from simply living in the Midtown neighborhood, right? I think you can probably cross that off your list of "worries".

If you practice safe sex, you don't have to worry about AIDS. That holds true in or out of Midtown... even in Redneckville.

If Cassandra is correct and the deceased was indeed a drug dealer, then the situation becomes less 'sad' than it otherwise would have been. In my opinion.

It's a sad sad situation regardless and could have/would have happened in any neighborhood the young man was visiting with what he was probably delivering. This was not a stranger on stranger crime. That was someone he knew.

the video clearly shows Lee holding the drug package in his left hand, so the guy just walks up and shoots him in the back stealing the drugs

CASSANDRA...Are you a drug sniffing dog? No. You have ZERO proof of what he is holding. Why would you even assume? I have been followed through that same door by someone from the parking lot....I had the chance to quickly dart out of his reach. I had a bag in my hand that DIDNT contain drugs. I could have been him. Go back to your daily soaps and leave the investigating to the pros... thx

Here is more info. Lee was not from the hood, he grew up with a single mom in and around the Highlands. At some point his mom moved to the burbs and he went to Riverwood. He was delivering a "substantial" amount of marijuana to a resident in the Ford Factory Lofts (think more than a bag), a friend from when he was at Grady High School. He buzzed the friend, and when he didn't show up at the friend's door inside, friend goes down and Lee is down and shot once in the back. He probably would not have fought the robber. The robber clearly followed him there and is seen going right for the bag while shooting him. Shooter has a large diamond earring in left ear.

Cassandra either you have some valuable information concerning the crime and should contact the APD or are a pretty pathetic troll spread falsehoods and innuendo. Either way revealing all in a comments section and repeatedly stating the victim was a drug dealer on a run shows a sad display of judgment.

Cassandra thanks for your info...not sure how you know this but your story makes logical sense to me. But why was Lee delivering this? Was he the go between? And how did the killer know that Lee had the large amount of MJ on him? That's the missing link between the killer and Lee.

The police have all this info, and have talked to the customer who was awaiting the order. Don't worry, they aren't going to waste time investigating this as a "random Kroger customer holding a bag of kale" robbery. It was a drug ripoff. To the doubters, how did I know the victim's name in the 7:44 am post? Lucky guess??

How is it possible that the police have all this information that you seem to be the ONLY person to know? Also how can you know all of this information, yet not know if Lee was 19 or 20 just mere hours ago? You are an incredibly insensitive person, and your accusations are no doubt unappreciated by everyone who's lives had been impacted by Lee.

This case is still under investigation. I know we are all hurting, but please find a better way to cope. Your bluntness and insensitivities to the situation are doing way more harm then good. He was a good man, with a kind heart, who lost his life. Be respectful and leave it at that.

Jesus Christ Cassandra. You are deplorable. You "facts" are so skewed and not necessary at this point. Lee was an absolute great KiD! He played sports in our community and was friends with all of our sons. I drove him to play soccer and loved for him to visit our home. A drug dealer? Your scope of what qualifies someone to receive this title is very judge mental. Lee went to college and wanted his life to be valuable. I will choose not to believe your accusations at this time and mourn the loss of contributions to this community and his smile that lit up the world. Lee's mother is undeserving of your accusations and we find them in total poor taste. I consider you to be quite frightening and will pray for you. Please show respect because whatever caused his murder does not change the fact that Atlanta does have many problems. But Lee was not one of them.

Davina: Why is being a drug dealer a bad thing? Why can't someone be a drug dealer and a great kid, a drug dealer and play sports, a drug dealer and have a valuable life? You are the one who is judgmental if you think someone selling drugs to other adults is somehow bad or wrong, especially when you consider that the people who sell and transport the things that actually kill people in this country - cigarettes and alcohol - are working in "respected" jobs, like behind the counter at a gas station, in a grocery store, or drving the beer delivery truck.

Selling marijuana and even meth (yes, meth... look up how many people die from that drug and you'll see it's at the bottom of the list with marijuana) and other drugs is not nearly as bad as the legal substances that we get from the licensed dealers, aka pharmacists.

Davina

11:34 pm on Tuesday, November 13, 2012

And people in your building should worry. There are a lot of things happening in all areas of Atlanta. A family in the suburbs should be concerned of desperate, ruthless people committing crimes. But the reputation of your building is so much less concern than this bright young mans life. Something is wrong with you.

And one more thing Cassandra. To try and skew an investigation into a ruthless murder by deeming his life less valuable is unfair to his family and friends. If you had a family member who was rumored to be an escort and she was murdered, would you like for the police to treat it differently because of rumors? How dare you take a single minute of time that Lee and his family deserves in this investigation by APD!

Let me just comment that when you allow a known drug infested, prostitute/drug dealer hangout like MJQ to thrive unabated on this corner for years, what the hell do you expect to happen?
