Midtown Awaits New Grocery Store

"Old-school but upscale bodega" set to open this summer

Midtown is about to get another grocery store and it will be located near the corner of Peachtree and 10th streets.

The Birmingham News reported late last week that Mamanoes Grocery Shop will expand from the Vulcan City by opening its second store in the heart of Atlanta in July. The original, described as “an old-school but upscale bodega,” was opened in downtown Birmingham’s Loft District in June 2010.

The website Shop Birmingham described the store as follows:

Mamanoes sells wine, imported beer (including high-gravity brews), fresh fruits and vegetables, baked goods, sodas, juices, dog food, canned goods, assorted paper products, and a deli offering butcher's cuts and sliced meats and cheeses. For those in a hurry, orders can be placed online or phoned in, allowing customers to drive to the store for curbside pick-up service. Loft dwellers walking their dogs will have the convenience of shopping as their pets are pampered by a "pet valet" service, allowing patrons to leash their dogs in a covered area supplied with fresh water and inexpensive doggie treats.

Earlier this year, owner Antonio Boyd told the website Weld for Birmingham, “The store is set up around the idea of being efficient with inventory. My thing is providing customers with what they want. So I try to keep the best and freshest products accessible. I track expiration dates on a daily basis. I don’t buy anything by the case unless customers request it.”

The site went on to say that “the real wonder of Mamanoes is its remarkable capacity for making available things that, in the life of the average household or small business, generally fall into the category of never seeming to be at hand when one needs them.”

The Birmingham location is closed on Sundays, but provides delivery five days a week through it Mamanoes Direct program. Orders must be at least $50 and be placed by 5 p.m. for next morning delivery. From the Mamanoes site: “Clients have the ability to choose from over 3,800 plus items and if a product wanted is not in inventory, it can be specially ordered for a fee.”

Patch is awaiting a return phone call from Mr. Boyd at the time of this article posting.

Hopefully the owners of this place demolish that decrepit building on the NE corner of Peachtree and 10th. Such a great location, but not for that past weird restaurant and farmers market.

I guess that is why they have been expanding and enclosing the place where the farmer's market was for a little while.

I welcome any high quality new development to Midtown. Hopefully they understand the market and the prevalence of nearby competition. They need to be sure that they have enough product to satisfy regular shopping needs. If I go there a few times and find I need to make a second trip to one of the two Midtown Publix, or Whole Foods, or Trader Joes, or Kroger, I will not continue to shop there. It'd be nice to have a nearby farmers market so we don't have to go to Decatur or Buford Highway.

I just visited their website and had to laugh at all the misspelled words (i.e "deoderant", "champayne", "savign" (I guess that's supposed to be sauvignon). This appears to be an attempt to recreate a Trader Joe's. Really disappointed that it's not going to be more of a farmer's market or an eco market type place, we have enough grocery stores in the area.

Totally disagree with the above! There are plenty customers within walking distance of Mamanoes who will walk there and others will drive just for the experience. If its any good, it could become a neighborhood staple like Alons in the Highlands and Savi Urban Market. I definitely intend to stop by on my way walking home from work to pick up an avocado or a loaf of bread!
