Midtown Neighborhood Carjacking at High Noon in Highly Visible Driveway

Armed gunmen steal man's Mercedes, but leave three pets behind.

Hours before a high-profile R&B singer was the victim of a carjacking Tuesday night on Spring Street, a Midtown Neighborhood resident found himself being carjacked, too, - in his own driveway in broad daylight.

About eight hours before R&B singer Bobby V. was stopped by two men and robbed of his red 2013 Bentley in a Midtown parking lot, two men sped off in a 2006 Mercedes-Benz C23 that belonged to a local resident who had just returned home with his pets from a trip to the vet.

The victim, who asked not to be identified by Patch, described how “very unnerving” the incident was that occurred on a sunny Tuesday afternoon shortly after noon near the area of 6th Street and Glendale Terrace.

“John” told Patch that he pulled into his driveway, which was not obstructed in so that others in the area could not see, when he noticed two black men in hooded sweatshirts approaching him. He described how he thought they might be asking for directions or yard work, but quickly realized that was not the case.

The suspect in the red hoodie, described by John as standing 5-foot-10, about 180 pounds with lighter to dark skin, calmly pointed a gun and the victim and said, “get out of the car and leave your cell phone as well.”

John complied as the second suspect, described as standing 6-foot, weighing approximately 160 pounds with a darker complexion, got behind the wheel of the car. At this point, the victim began pleading with the robbers to give him his pets – two Jack Russell terriers and a cat.

While the robbers fumbled with the door locks and eventually tossed two pet carriers out from the backseat, John managed to move around the car and rescue the third animal from the front passenger seat. The suspects then left in his car, but not before colliding with a ceramic planter while exiting the driveway.

“It wasn’t like I was getting out of a parked car on the street; they came on my property,” said John, who has lived in the neighborhood for 15 years. “If someone had seen them, I’m of the belief that they would not have hesitated to use the gun. It all went down very quickly.”

The tracking device on his stolen iPhone was quickly deactivated by the thieves and neither the phone nor car had been relocated as of Thursday afternoon.  What he did have though were his beloved animals.

“I kept repeating to them to please let me have my pets,” he said. “I’m so thankful nothing happened to them.”

John said he was aware of the Valentino carjacking incident and had checked Patch Thursday to see the photo of one of the suspects arrested in connection with that crime. While the photo was definitely not of the suspect in the red hoodie, John said the arrested man “could be the other, but I couldn’t say with certainty.”

Atlanta police, who responded to the scene of the Midtown Neighborhood crime, told Patch they were still investigating as to whether the two Tuesday carjackings were connected.

Police investigators are seeking assistance in identifying the suspects in these cases are asking anyone with information to call Zone 5 investigators at (404) 658-6636 or Crime Stoppers at (404) 577-8477.

The Tuesday Midtown carjackings came just days after a pair of carjackings in the Edgewood Retail District off Moreland Avenue.

I didn't see anything in the article about what race , or ethnic group. Based on my experience with King & Spalding partner RAYMOND E. BALTZ JR. (who should be in a federal jail) & the ALL WHITE group of 'Buckhead BASEBALL' fathers who surrounded me & blocked me from walking on the sidewalk CROSSDRESSED, i have learned that criminals come in all shapes, forms & races.

Chris, the article clearly states "when he noticed two black men in hooded sweatshirts approaching him." Race was indeed mentioned.

This is ALMOST as bad as when KING & SPALDING's RAYMOND E. BALTZ JR. & his 'Buckhead BASEBALL' tried to do a LEO FRANK LYNCH MOB REENACTMENT on me, when all i did was WALK ON THE PUBLIC SIDEWALK IN A CITY OF ATLANTA PUBLIC PARK!! And that was on March 5, 2009! Naturally i sent a 'Human Rights Commission complaint for to city hall, but apparently DIANE HARNELL COWHEN (former Parks & Recreation commissioner) made it disappear. ISN'T THAT OBSTRUCTION OF JU$TICE???!!! And Atlanta claims to be "international & all about diversity". WHAT A LOAD OF BULL $HIT!!! WHY IS COCA-COLA ENTERPRICES EVEN A MAJOR SPONSOR OF 'BUCKHEAD BASEBALL'?!!!??

What the hell does this any of this have to do with an armed car jacking in Midtown this week? Look, if you've got a grip with an discrimination infraction from an incident back in 2009, that's an entirely different conversation from the violent gun welding crime this article details. Unless your path on the sidewalk was blocked by armed gunman, then your comments on this topic irrelevant.

The time for Political Correctness is over. Anytime you see a thug in your neighborhood call 911. I do it all the time when I'm out in Midtown and other parts of town. And twice it resulted in one guy being arrested for an outstanding warrant and another time a guy have an illegal gun.

I blame this one on the owner. He should have known better than to drive around town, in a car, in broad daylight and then have the audacity to park on his own property which is highly visible! Clearly a recipe for disaster. I think we can enter this one in the "What Not to do File."

Crims target weak looking people. He should have had a gun. All that fooling with the car locks and running around to rescue his pets, he could have shot them up

There have been apparently quite a number of carjackings from the Edgewood Target parking lot quite recently, something like three -?

So it's not what APD is doing to protect Midtowners, but what is APD and the Mayor doing to protect all of town... ? In one of the recent string of eastside carjackings APD had an idea of who was involved and i think nabbed them. It would be very interesting to see a plot map of all the carjackings and other armed muggings since Jan. 2012; maybe then the Mayor might get tempted to put a taskforce together. Overall crime may be down, but stranger-on-stranger crime with a handgun is way up again.

I would like to see MPSA and MNA re-institue the monthly safety meetings, even if it's just quarterly. The briefings from APD were very helpful, it was good to meet more neighbors as well as officers, and residents could provide good information directly to APD about hotspots.

I don't get into crossdressing, but no one should ever be barred from walking on a sidewalk. I used to play at Buckhead Baseball, but all of those jerk offs that tried to block someone from walking there should have been fined about $5,000 each.

ChrisCrossdresser has hijacked yet another comment thread, which was originally about a violent carjacking, to complain about something that happened 3 years ago and is completely unrelated to the subject at hand. We understand you're upset, but express your anger in an appropriate forum, rather than every single comment thread. Better yet, do something about it, but stop going on, and on, and on, and on, and on, and on, and on about it. It's only making you look crazy.

With regard to the carjacking, APD has had a lot of success recently in making arrests on high profile crimes. I trust they'll be able to track down the thugs who did this too.

ADP has been doing a good job and catching criminals. But it's our justice system that is not letting them serve their full sentence and they are out on the streets in no time. I'm tired of hearing about people being arrested for the 30th or 40th time in Midtown! Enough is enough!

Atlanta isn't the only city which have issues with jail overcrowding and liberal judges alowing criminals to go free. Every big city has that issue. The diference is in police leadership. APD needs to change the apathetic culture among its officers that crime is a way of life in the city. APD needs to make it uncomfortable for criminals to operate so much so that criminals will decide to commit crimes in Dekalb or Cobb before they would in Fulton.

APD does a decent job catching criminals after victims come forward. But the goal is to prevent crimes from occurring in the first place. APD needs to figure out how to do that.

That's a great idea. However, I don't feel I should be doing APD's job while they sit around on their lazy asses. APD either isn't willing to control crime or they don't know how to control crime. Either way, if city leadership can't figure it out, they should be fired and competent leadership should be installed immediately.

Honestly it has come to a point where we need to contact police when suspicious persons are around Midtown. APD could make it easier by simply supplying phone app. to do so. Atlanta however is so PC that it probably never will, nor will it start using stop and frisk which is clearly needed in Atlanta.
In the meantime keep flooding them with any suspicious activity and maybe the current administration will take note.
Anyway elections are coming up and I'll donate to and support the candidate/s that propose solid steps on crime prevention and law enforcement.

That's what I was saying before. Call 911 when you see suspicious thugs in your neighborhood. I do it all the time. And don't listen to that PC or racial profiling crap. We all know what a thug is. They don't try to hide what the look like. You never hear that the description of the robbery suspect was wearing a suit! The more you call 911, the thugs will start getting the message and get tired of being harassed/arrested by the cops. Also, the volume of 911 calls dictate how much your neighborhood is patrolled.

For those whining wanting to see something as offensive as ' stop-n-frisk' police have long ago have the authority to do it, I'm blk live in midtown walkeverywhere to the park, going for breakfast or coming in at night if ever the BS of NYC starts here the only thing you get is confrontation from instant anger! It adds to the already friend or foe eyeballing, buy a beer for me from the crazy homeless, or drugs from idiots who just popup? And yeah already stopped by APD all before I get to the wamth of my door. I have long had anger at anyone who throws a pistol in someone's face until a predator knows there's a ' certainty of punishment' or retribution *ish is going to continue.

You can be as confrontational as you want, but if you go sideways on a cop in NYC or LA, you're in for a beat down. The problem is APD hires a bunch of pansys who are afraid to take control of situations and put people like you in their places. You may talk like a tough guy but you won't be giving attitude to a cop in say Miami. Those Cubanos would whip your black a$$.

So stop and frisk a petty much proven law enforcement and crime prevention technique is worth "instant anger", but stories about perps car jacking, assaulting, and in some cases killing people in your neighborhood doesn't?
Unfortunately it already has become friend or foe....hint, your friends aren't the ones looking and acting like thugs.

The cops and their attitudes towards their jobs, and their management have a lot to do with street crime, sure. But consider that these same cops- most who are good professionals- do get worn out seeing perp after perp who they have brought good cases on get let out with probation, crime after crime after crime. The judges suck, plain and simple: how many contested seats do you see at election time? That whole thing is a sham. Then look at the frickin' county, Fulton, which seemingly can do absolutely nothing well: the jail has been under a Federal judges' consent decree for years. The individual patrolmen can only do so much.

But do call 911! On *anything/one* suspicious!
