MNA invests more than $105K in the neighborhood

May is membership month for the Midtown Neighbors’ Association, which is hosting a “Mingle in Midtown” event Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Takorea.

The restaurant, located at 818 Juniper Street, is donating 10 percent of its net proceeds that night to the MNA. Complementary light appetizers and drink specials will be available, so bring your neighbors and friends and help raise money for the MNA.  

Did you know since 2005, MNA has invested more than $105,000 in your neighborhood? Below is a list of how membership dollars and contributions have gone to work in the community:

• Safety Initiatives: $51,750
• Environmental & Green Community: $36,500
• Education: $11,000
• Stakeholder Assocations (Midtown Alliance & NPU-E): $7,250

These are a few of the many areas MNA contributes in building the community to make Midtown safer, greener and healthier. Your membership allows MNA to continue to invest financial and volunteer resources in Midtown.

During Wednesday's mingle event, the Midtown Parents' Group will also be holding leadership elections. President Elizabeth Lieberman has moved from Atlanta, and the organization needs a new president and a listserv manager.

On Tuesday, the City of Atlanta’s Midtown SPI-16 & SPI-17 Development Review Committee (DRC) will hold a meeting to discuss among other things, an application for the construction of a mixed-use project located at the northwest corner of 6th and Juniper streets in Midtown.

The “Novare Residential” application calls for a 23-story building including ground floor retail and 320 residential units. Parking will be in an adjacent deck at the southwest corner of 7th and Juniper streets according to the application.

Other applications to be discussed during Tuesday’s 5:30 p.m. meeting at 999 Peachtree Street (5th Floor Conference Center) include:

991 Piedmont Avenue (Gilbert’s Expansion) - Project Type: Interior renovation and exterior façade enhancements to the former Outwrite Bookshop for the purpose of expanding restaurant operations into the new space.

933 Peachtree Street (James Madison Salon) - Project Type: Storefront modifications to create a new entrance to the salon from the sidewalk. New double doors will be recessed inside a vestibule.

1065 Peachtree Street (Café Intermezzo) - Project Type: Storefront modifications for a new restaurant tenant, including a new cover over an outdoor dining area along Peachtree Street.

1080 Peachtree Street (Mi Cocina) - Project Type: Storefront modifications for a new restaurant tenant, including a new door on Peachtree and patio areas along 11th Street and Peachtree.

Also Tuesday night, there is a 6 p.m. Community Meeting to discuss issues surrounding the Amsterdam Walk area. Among the issues expected to be addressed include:

• the volume of traffic on Amsterdam Avenue
• concerns about emergency equipment proceeding down Amsterdam Avenue unimpeded
• patrons continuing to park in front of fire hydrant
• noise and loitering issues; and more.
