Nonprofit Food Truck To Get Rolling in New Year

Collaboration amongst Atlanta hospitality and real estate leaders to benefit the westside's City of Refuge.

It’s not just Atlantans looking for a yummy lunch or mid-day snack who will benefit from the arrival of the city’s newest food truck, but individuals and families getting help from City of Refuge have much to gain as well.

With Ford Fry at the culinary helm and the commitment and support of North American Properties, Vantage Atlanta, and Iconologic, along with the residents and supporters of City of Refuge, the truck is scheduled to launch in spring of 2013.

“We are going to have fun with this truck,” said Fry, who among the restaurants he owns includes the westside’s JCT. Kitchen & Bar and The Optimist and Oyster Bar at The Optimist. “It will give the residents of City of Refuge a great learning experience and a place to work while also creating a business model to generate increased funding for their programs. And it’s going to be quirky and delicious. I can’t think of a better way to spend my time and energy.”

City of Refuge is located on Atlanta’s westside at 1300 Joseph E. Boone Boulevard. The nonprofit organization is dedicated to community development efforts that lead to the stability and sustainability of the local community in zip code 30314. The mission of City of Refuge is to bring strength, hope and light to Atlanta’s last, lost and least.

“Our onsite 180 Kitchen already serves approximately 2,500 meals each week to those in need and supplies catering for area events so this is a natural evolution for us,” said Bruce Deel, founder of City of Refuge, in a release. “Our people are willing to work hard to get ahead and change their lives. We provide them information and opportunity and that’s exactly what the food truck will do.”

The truck name and culinary concept are in development and will be released before the end of the year. Anyone interested in making a donation to the project can go to www.cityofrefugeatl.org.
