NPU-E to discuss Gilbert's expansion
At tonight's meeting, NPU-E will discuss proposals related to the expansion of the former Outwrite Bookstore space in Midtown.
The May Neighborhood Planning Unit-E meeting is set for Tuesday at Peachtree Christian Church located at 1580 Peachtree Street. NPU-E serves Midtown, Ansley Park, Atlantic Station, Home Park, Georgia Tech and West Midtown.
The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. and the public is invited to attend. The volunteer board of elected community leaders make recommendations to the city on voting issues including zoning and permit applications.
On tonight’s agenda, the owners of Gilbert’s Café & Bar are seeking a Special Exemption Permit (SEP) to reduce the off-street parking requirement at the former Outwrite Bookstore & Coffeehouse space, which they have taken over.
Gilbert’s, the gay-friendly restaurant/bar owned by brothers Gilbert and Sean Yeremian, is next door to the 2,500 square-foot Outwrite space and the Yeremians want to expand the Outwrite site for another planned restaurant/bar.
In doing such, they want to reduce the off-street parking at the site located at 991 Piedmont Avenue from 49 spaces to none. Their intent is to rent parking spaces from BLUE MedSpa, located nearby at 190 10th Street.
Special events and outdoor festivals to be discussed and voted on for approval:

Renting out the spaces from Blue seems like the perfect solution. It's great when Atlanta gets creative about parking solutions, rather than the "pave it over" mentality of the past.

Reducing the spaces from 49 to 0...does that mean they are wnating to remove all the parking behind the restaurant (entrance from Piedmont). Ans if so that would be all the parking for Blakes as well. Need more info I know, but seems to be a poor plan. Now, if they mean they wnat to trasnfer the requirement for 49 new spaces from onsite to Blue Medspa that could be a good plan. Parking in the area has already deteriorated due to the recent private reserved onstreet parking on Myrtle, 9th st Etc.

I don't know who did the counting, but there is no way 49 cars fit in that parking lot!

Nobody will park over at the Blue Med Spa, where they have to pay. Not when they can just come around the corner to Myrtle and park on the street, tossing any parking tickets they receive onto the ground. Drive around the neighborhood on any weekend night and you know exactly what I'm talking about.

I agree Terry, that private reserved parking mess on Myrtle needs to be stopped. It is driving away business, and other than a windfall for park atlanta, benefits few.

Hopefully some parking spaces can be preserved in addition to the spaces at the Blue Spa. Parking in the area is inadequate, more spaces are needed, especially if expanded business is anticipated. Another problem to be resolved is moving the cab stand from in front of Blakes, where cabbies park far from the curb and block the right lane of east bound traffic on 10th St. creating a hazard for drivers using that lane to turn right onto Myrtle. More spaces, not an egual exchange is needed if business expansion leads to expanded visits to the area. Bruce Safman
