Police Arrest "Ptosis" Graffiti Tagger

Zachary Kahn faces four felony and six misdemeanor charges.

Atlanta police said Friday they arrested a man they say is responsible for a string of graffiti taggings in metro Atlanta, including in Midtown and along Georgia Avenue in Summerhill.

Zachary Kahn, 21, was arrested Dec. 27 on four felony and six misdemeanor arrests.

Kahn, who, according to the police, tags under the name "ptosis," is responsible for more than 100 instances of vandalism in Fulton and DeKalb counties, including on fencing at 1491 Piedmont Avenue near Ansley Mall.

Brad Etterle, the Atlanta Police Department’s graffiti abatement officer, arrested Kahn after tying him to several acts of vandalism. That investigation linked Kahn to the tag "ptosis," a Greek word referring to the drooping or falling of the eyelid.

The Summerhill taggings were all on Georgia Avenue and Reed Street:

  • 25 Georgia Ave.
  • 39 Georgia Ave.
  • 59 Georgia Ave.
  • 60 Georgia Ave.
  • 73 Georgia Ave.
  • 87 Georgia Ave.
  • 669 Reed St.

All of the Summerhill properties are owned by the same person, who told police he did not authorize the spray-painting and that all of the properties were painted over in December of 2011, but that they were re-tagged since then.

It's not immediately clear if the the owner or his properties were being specifically targeted.

"We are thrilled that the individual perpetrating these crimes has been caught. We would like to see him perform hundreds of hours of community service in Summerhill to include painting and trash removal," Suzanne Mitchell, president of the Organized Neighbors of Summerhill told East Atlanta Patch. "The community will partner with Waste Management to provide trash and recycle bins for his service hours."

Graffiti and tagging has been a problem all over Atlanta leading the city to form the Graffiti Task Force last year.

I think we should start hitting convicts with a whip like they do in Singapore. Locking this guy up in a nice air conditioned jail cell isn't going to stop him from tagging again.

No jail time. Hard labor. That is what all criminals should have to do. Never ending trash & debris pickup, Sidewalk weeding, street sweeping, painting, food pantry gardens for the needy, etc. bring back the chain gangs. We all hate the amount of amenities that criminals have. It's the prisoners themselves that make staying in prison truly bad.

Good Job arresting a young man with a can of spray paint. While robberies in the piedmont park 10th street area are on the rise.

It's a good thing the cops got to him before the property owners did. They could have mistaken that can for a weapon and shot his a$$. That would have been really funny!!!!!!

It's ridiculous that people are calling for jail time for this minor offense.
The jails are full of people who did minor things, we don't need more of them in there for nothing.

I'm not calling for jail time. I just said they should whip is a$$ like they do in other countries. If tagged your house or car, I would expect to get my a$$ kicked and you'd have every right to do it. LOL

Hard to call this magnitude of damage as "minor." Stop the minor offenses early, and it'll prevent major ones down the road. Plus, positively impact quality of life. My vote: 30 days jail and fines.

I agree jail time is ridiculous.. The kid needs to see a psychologist and do community service. Jail time would turn a silly kid into a resentful, real criminal. He did not kill anyone or hurt anyone. He was an artistic kid whom thought it was cool to tag around the city.

He may not have hurt anybody physically but he hurt somebody's wallet. Somebody has to pay for the paint to undo the damage. So if this guy goes to jail and gets butt raped by a bunch of homies, I won't feel sorry for him. As a matter of fact, I would laugh my butt off. No pun intended......

Kid? Come on... Most 7 year olds know not to draw on walls. By the time you're 21, you're well old enough to know better.

Don't glorify his crime by posting his tags.

You guys are so sad. Calling for a young, talented artist to go to jail (actually prison) over tagging. All of this feeds into the prison industrial complex... I wish we could value the lives of others and not simply label people as criminals. I went to high school with this young man. And, he was one of the kindest people I've ever met. Do you guys not understand that his life is about to ruined because he wanted to publicly express himself? Lets just jail all musicians and film makers as well huh? That'd make for a lovely society.

I think he could find a way to "publicly express himself" without defacing and damaging other people's property.

Graffiti is a crime and a nuisance and should be treated accordingly.

If you disagree, why don't you volunteer your home or car as a canvas for this guy to "express himself" all over it?

these are forgotton areas for the most part, covered with ART, by talents like this. someone needs to speak it. yes, and possibly pay for it later. but these arnt the true villans of today, just the ones speaking out

It is not a talent (or "art") to write your name on other people's property. It is a crime. It causes other people time and money to get rid of it, and it looks like crap and devalues the neighborhood. It was his choice to commit this crime, which opens himself up to consequences. Which he must now pay for. That is how society is supposed to work. Crime = consequences.

@Christian...'talented artist'? You're right. It's sheer genius that this 'artist' could imagine so many unconventional places to write his name. Sadly Van Gogh wasn't recognized for his greatness until after his death. It may take generations for this world to realize the greatness of 'ptosis'. Especially the one on the dumpster. It works on so many levels.

ruining a young mans life for these crimes is what is wrong with society today. wearing my "free ptosis" tee today, and spreading the images of his ART all over the internet, fb, and the atl. care about real crimes b4 i spray up your house, name on link...hahah

what a horrible depressing world we live in. A place where we are not free to express ourselves. Where the rich remain rich and the powerful remain powerful. A place where if you don't live by their morals, you suffer. A place where cameras watch you from every angle and track everything you do. A place where you live in fear of uncertainty, and the only way to express yourself is through what you purchase.
Damn the world...
