Taxi driver attacked by several men outside Peachtree-Pine homeless shelter
Victim allegedly punched and robbed of money by fare passenger, then has front teeth knocked out during attack by several males after he exited his vehicle to retrieve his money from the suspect.
A taxi cab driver was assaulted by several men and robbed this week after dropping off a passenger near the Peachtree-Pine homeless shelter just south of Midtown.
According to the narrative reported by the Atlanta police officer on the scene, the driver suffered lost front teeth and other facial injuries during the incident in which he was robbed by a single passenger, and later “attacked by several males that were at the location” after exiting his taxi.
According to the officer’s narrative, the incident occurred at approximately 6:15 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 17 in front of the shelter. After picking up his male passenger at 232 Forsyth Street, the driver was asked to drive to a motel located at 140 Pine Street.
During the ride, the passenger asked the driver if he could use the driver’s identification to check him into the motel because he had lost his. Shortly after the driver refused this request, the perpetrator jump from the back seat of the mini van taxi to the front passenger seat, and then asked the driver to stop in front of the shelter that sits on Pine Street between Peachtree and Courtland streets.
As the victim stopped the vehicle, the perpetrator reportedly punched him in the face, grabbed money that was sitting in the cupholder, and exited the vehicle. The driver also exited the vehicle, but as he approached the perpetrator to get his money back, “he was attacked by several males that were at the location” according to the officer’s narrative.
During the attack, the victim’s front teeth were knocked out and he received other facial injuries. The taxi driver stated the perpetrator along with the other attackers fled east on Pine toward Courtland.
The assailant from the cab ride is described as a black male, approximately 5-foot-10 in height, having a wig or hair weave (giving an appearance of having longer hair), and wearing a black coat and black shorts. No descriptions were provided of the other men involved in the attack.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact the Atlanta Police Department at 404-577-8477.
The incident occurred two days after the City of Atlanta scored a major legal win over the Metropolitan Atlanta Task Force for the Homeless that could lead to the 2013 closing of the Task Force-operated Peachtree-Pine homeless shelter where police have said a certain amount of criminal activity that occurs in Midtown originates from those staying at and around the shelter.

You may indeed be a racist, or not. Who cares? When I (also) read of over-the-top violent crime, I also expect the perpetrators to be the 12% minority that authors a disproportionate amount of violent crime, with the violence often or almost being an end in itself-- 85yo woman raped and beaten? Hell yes: black guy, white woman, almost every time. Try to imagine a white guy beating and raping an old black woman. You called it, bro', and you were right. As I'm fond of saying, "I'm not racist, I'm prejudiced". Three of the last 4 stranded motorists I stopped to help/check on were black, but if I hear of an armed robbery, I'll bet the perp(s) is/are black.

James, you are committing a twist of logic. No one has made the claim that the perps committed the crime BECAUSE of their skin color. Likewise, no one claimed that ALL black people commit crimes. But, the fact is that almost all the crime committed in Midtown is by black males. And I think we (everyone, not angry white men or some other category you may try to assign us) have no more patience for it.

Amen, Black on white crime is, and has been an epidemic for decades now as evidenced by the two major national crime reporting surveys, which corporate media totally ignores as the statistics are shocking. The black on white rape stastics are off the rails, particularly the 'rate', which varies 50 go a 100 to 1 for black on white, and virtually zero for white on black.
Some years ago we had an active serial rapist here, snatching women even at bus stops. The police and media would not say whethe black or white (from witnesses), saying it was not their policy to release the race of perps. The city woman, including the sisters, when nuts on them, demanding that they be given that info for at least some comfort and to be aware. The media and police finally relented.
The reaons they were holding back was that almost all the rapist are black and they wanted to keep hiding that from the public, thinking it was unfair for them to know that, as it might make the prejudiced toward black rapists or something.

You didn't NEED to make the claims because clearly the central point of your comment is skin color. And for you to pretend your focus on skin color doesn't affect the way you view all black men is fantasy. In fact if you or I had grown up in the same circumstances as these people we would likely be criminals as well. This is a societal problem but of course the simple-mined will only grasp onto the obvious.

Vianen, Marty, Trollie, Ikeahacker, your vitriol against your neighbor (me), and the ignorance of your comments, are pathetic and sad. Further, ad hominem attacks on me do nothing to support your opinions on the matter, and, in fact, none of you even offered opinions on the crime issue, you just came here to attack me. I'll make my position very clear, again. I am utterly disgusted and fed up with the crime in our neighborhood. We are not animals and I refuse to live like such. We hear of violent crimes on our neighbors reported nearly every single day. They are almost always committed by young black males. That is a fact. That is who is committing the crime. I don't know the solution to the problem, and apparently neither do any of you, nor do the police. But, one step in putting an end to the problem is to identify the problem. You can be ignorant, you can bury your head in the sand, you can sing Kumbaya and hope for world peace, you can play the race card and insult anyone who points out the problem, you can come here and call names, but that ignorant crap will not change any of the facts, it will not stop me from pointing out those facts, and it will do nothing toward finding a solution to the crime problem in our neighborhood.

Pointing out the perpetrators are black doesn't provide any insight. Its a black city. in Seattle the crimes are committed by whites. We are in the city that is 60 percent black. we are also in the city that house is large pocket of poor people. Its a recipe for disaster. so I guess the point is Mark we got it. you live in a black city that has a large number of poor people that live in the city centre that are disproportionately black...get over it.

Ikeahacker, first, I always point out age, gender, and race, as reported by Patch or APD. For some reason, many folks seem to be hung up only on the race characteristic. Pointing out that they are black does provide insight. The racial demographics of Midtown are different than the city overall, with 30308 being about 46% black and 30309 being only about 15% black. The fact that the overwhelming majority of violent crime is committed by black males suggests that the perps are coming from elsewhere and preying on our neighborhood, which is important to note. Also, whether the PC crowd likes it or not, it is important for us, as potential victims, to have heightened awareness, which includes being cognizant of what groups are committing most crimes. The law may not technically be able to profile, but I sure as hell will when my personal safety is in jeopardy. But, being fair, I don't just consider age, race, and gender, I also consider time of day, part of the neighborhood I'm in, and, perhaps most importantly, suspicious behavior such as being followed, or loitering. All deserve consideration when assessing one's safety situation.

You are stating the obvious. Let's just do this...we know for the next 6 months if any crimes are committed in Midtown they will probably be committed by black men....based on the demographics of the city so you can stop providing us this information. Atlanta is not 60% black it is closer to 55%, and they commit well over 55% of the crime. It is very much in disproportion to their populace. Thus your argument seems grounded on very faulty logic.

I would like to point out something about Marc's chronic comments about the racial make-up of Midtown criminals.
I just did a quick audit of the MPSA website (www.midtownponce.org) and compiled a list of 47 named criminals from MPSA communications in the last four years. Of those, only 20 of those are black, and one is Asian. The majority of criminals named in MPSA public communications are white. I may have missed one or two, but that would not impact the breakdown much if any. If you want to check it out yourself just do a search for "street criminals" or "court watch" on the MPSA website.
I also manage MPSA's research and tracking of street criminals appearing with some regularity in the neighborhood, and have indexed almost 300 unique criminal individuals. The break-down among those is roughly half and half. This is a ballpark figure since we do not record race in the files we keep. I would be willing to bet that a systematic computation of breakdown would turn out to be somewhere around 55% white and 45% black or other. Again, we find that race is irrelevant in the criminal and nuisance activity we have been dealing with over the last ten years.

My quick audit of the MPSA website shows otherwise. Of the 40 I went through, 35 were black. Since there's no database to filter by race, I had to go through one by one. However, my stats are much different from yours. I'm not sure your analysis can be trusted.

BTW, blacks only represent 60 percent of the population for the city of Atlanta. The black population specifically for midtown is probably much less since blacks are concentrated mostly in the south end. However, they account for more than 80 percent of the arrestees in midtown. The numbers don't lie. Black males are more likely to be criminals that whites.

@Dookie Doo - you are probably looking at the same individual repeatedly. Quite a few individuals appear repeatedly. Some have more photos than others, and some photos appear repeatedly. Count names, not pictures. But since I run the website I know all the criminals off-hand, so I guess that gives me an unfair advantage when surveying the site for this.
Dookie Doo

@Steve No sir, I did not count just pictures and I did not count individuals twice. But I won't argue your flawed statistice. Why not go with independent statistics provided by the Fulton County Sheriff's Office. Their inmate numbers for black males are disproportionate to their represented population. Blacks only make up 60 percent of the city of Atlanta. However, they account for 90+ percent of the jail population. The numbers don't lie.

Steve Gower, my comments are as "chronic" as are the news reports in Patch and MPSA. I only note age, race, and gender when they are reported in these forums. Further, the key is violent crime. While all crime is a problem, our personal safety is significantly more endangered by those who assault, rob at gunpoint, car-jack, break-and-enter, and the like. In general, prostitution, disturbing the peace, petty theft, public intoxication, and the like are much less of a safety risk for our neighbors. I'd be curious to see how those stats look.

@J.Dean... Curious as to what the rape statistics are for white males against white females? Any idea? You seem to view crime only through the prism of race. This is a complete flaw in your thinking. Your perspective only perpetuate viscous stereotypes and the out dated view that it's only black males who commit rapes against white women. According to most rape statistics in America, all women regardless of race are more likely to be raped by an acquaintance, date raped, or perhaps even raped or assaulted by close family member. The instances of women being randomly abducted from the bus stop are very rare and in most cases nothing more than anomalies sensationalized by crime obsessed local news stations and national media outlets striving for ratings. When it comes to street crime, random rape, or any violent crime in Atlanta, local news stations constantly brainwash the general public by reporting the same sensationalized news story over and over again. Ex, the most popular local news format in Atlanta is to lead the broadcast with a crime related "Top News Story", then launch into a never ending bombardment of the same crime story at 4:30 pm, 5 pm, 5:30 pm, 6 pm, and so on. This type of repetitive crime reporting and media sensationalism keeps you, Marc, and others in a constant state of fear, confusion, and anger. Wake up!!!! Get out and experience life. Befriend people who are different from you. I'm sure you'll find that most people regardless of race are great people.

When you still have large pockets of poverty inside of a city that has us - the condo, home and w2 wage earners it creates diversity...lol
This diversity will filter into and touch our lives in the form of vagrancy, crime, homelessness. We cant 'gate' it out of our lives
As long as there is boulevards, bankhead,.swats, 4th.ward, parts of east atlanta all.circling around us it can spill into our lives. Eliminating the projects helped but there are still large concentrations of crime in and around preferred nabes.
The problem is the revolving door of fulton county that ALLOWS these criminals to continue to walk the streets and markets this as.a destination for crime in comparison to other counties.
Come here commit crime and make bail.

@Dookie Doo - The problem is not the police although APD needs alot more officers around. A major part of the problem lies in the Fulton County courts. We have judges turning criminals back into the community despite having been arrested and convicted 20, 30, or even 40 times. Too many criminals are given probation to run concurrently with existing probation. You should see some of the criminals we write about at the MPSA website, for example this one: http://www.midtownponce.org/p2282.html
In many jurisdictions it is not even possible to get arrested more than three or four times on felony charges - they would finish you off very early on as needed. And in this example the offender has since then been arrested for breaking into cars. As an update to this example Coleman was locked up again last year for breaking into cars. He was sentenced to "drug court", with probation sentence running concurrently with probation for previous burglary in same neighborhood. He's back out on the streets somewhere, and at some point this throw-away will be recycled through the Fulton County court again for the umpteenth time. He's been in prison before but Fulton judges keep sentencing criminals like this with increasing leniency with each new felony...

You make a good point. I feel we should have 3 strike laws similar to California, legislation that mandates prisoners serve at least 85% of their sentences, and minimum/madndatory jail terms. We can no longer trust judges to determine proper sentencing. I think law makers have to mandate sentencing laws that are inflexible in order to keep liberal judges in check.

BTW, I don't feel APD needs more officers. The city of Miami is similar in size and population. Yet they are able to keep crime under control despite their police department having one third less officers than APD. The difference is several years ago, they did a nation wide search for a police chief and they hired a retired NYPD executive who knew what he was doing. APD needs a change in leadership, not more officers.

Young black males commit most of the crime in Midtown. It's disproportionately high. It's irrefutable. We get it. So what? If there's a young black male walking down the street toward me, I'm a lot more cautious. However, I know too many really nice, smart, motivated young black males to make any broader generalizations. By the way, I bet 99% of the crime in Midtown is committed by males. Should we start there?
Dookie Doo

Well, now that you recognize that black males are the problem, what do you suggest we do about it. I suggest we create zero tolerance policing policies and apply George Kelling's broken widows theory to control crime. If that doesn't work, we should mandate that black males are not allowed to be seen in public in midtown after 8pm. If they are, it's an automatic arrest.

bob - yes - that's precisely the point! All of the perps characteristics are relevant. Some folks just seem preoccupied by race. I'm not terribly concerned about middle-aged black women, or old Asian men, or young white girls. Its the combo of young AND black AND male that seems most problematic in our neighborhood. Watch how these young black men talk about how they won't get caught and boast about selling illegal alcohol and drugs on camera in downtown Atlanta. In one link many of the men have been arrested multiple times for drug crimes and are being asked to leave the property for criminal trespassing. Look how arrogant and brazen their attitudes are.
No one enforced criminal trespassing and they are allowed to hang out all day and night and sell drugs in downtown Atlanta.

Sorry, the only answer is on the front end. Once these kids drop out of school, fall under the sway of elder neighborhood roughs and embark down the road of crime and become permanently unemployable they will be a drag on society to the grave - taxing police resources, court resources, hospital resources and dragging down entire neighborhoods.
I'm not talking about white guilt or 60s war on poverty, but until we do something to show these kids that another way of life is possible - BEFORE they become felons - and get a high school diploma. I live near 3 senior centers. I am unaware of any youth centers where kids can go to get help with homework and nuture interests in things like computers, music or the world in general.
I live in the O4W and have met a few young kids from Bedford Pines. I can tell you that at a certain age, they are just like any other kids - nice, curious and kids. Something happens between that age and becoming teenagers.
You can call for harsher sentences, zero tolerance policing and more police, but, all of that is on the back end. What we need is a generation of kids that make better decisions when they are at that fork in the road, and know that when they are older, they will go back into 'hood and raise up the next generation.
I know that is not what some of you want to hear, but that is my take on the situation. You can pay for police, jail and hospitals, or you can staff youth centers with edu student mentors from AU, GSU, GT and Emory.
