UPDATED: 11:30 a.m.
A tree fell on a car just outside of West Midtown, killing the man inside.
The incident occurred shortly after 8 a.m. Tuesday morning at Tilden and West Marietta streets, according to Officer Kim Jones, spokeswoman with the Atlanta police.
"The vehicle was traveling," Jones said. "The tree gave way, probably because of the weather, and fell on the vehicle."
Jones said police could not name the victim. "We don't have any information to identify him yet," she said.
Jones said the tree fell over the passenger and driver compartments of the car. "Anybody that was in that vehicle would be deceased," she said.
Around 10 a.m., Georgia Power crews had arrived on the scene. "They are trying to cut the power off," Jones said. The fire, water and parks and recreation departments also were on the scene.
"Once they cut the tree up, they are going to have to go in and extricate the person out of the vehicle," she said.
Capt. Jolyan Bundrige, spokesman for the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department, said that process could take the remainder of the day.
"It's a huge tree," Bundrige said. "It's over four feet in diameter and over 100 feet in length ... It's definitely a tragedy."
