Georgia Tech Crime Report: Pedestrian Robbery and Frat Fighting
Student robbed on North Avenue while returning to campus Saturday morning.
A Georgia Tech student walking back to campus through Midtown was a victim of a pedestrian robbery early Saturday morning.
According to the Georgia Tech Police Department, which was the first to distribute details of the crime to the public, "a student reported he was walking back to campus from the North Avenue MARTA station around 1:00 a.m. when he was approached by a male who demanded the victim's belongings."
The victim told the responding Atlanta police officer that he was outside The Varsity at 61 North Ave. when the suspect, who stood approximately 6-foot-1, and weighed 175 pounds, “walked up to him and told him to give him his phone and his money in his wallet." Though the suspect did not have a weapon visible, the victim stated that he was "intimidated by the man," so he gave him his Samsung Galaxy phone and his money totaling $50 dollars.
The suspect fled on foot, and the victim told police he did not get a good look at him to be able to identify him in a lineup.
In a separate incident on Tech's campus the day before, a fraternity party turned violent when a person suffered a facial laceration during a fight. The incident happened during the early hours of Friday, Feb. 22 when according to the police report, "a person was cut on the cheek with a broken beer bottle."
The incident occurred at 801 Techwood Drive inside the Kappa Alpha fraternity house. The two individuals who engaged in the fight were both Tech students who live off campus. According to the police report, both individuals had been drinking and a fight broke out between the two regarding a text from a girl.
According to a school spokesman, no charges have been filed yet, and the investigation is ongoing.

Should we assume the male who committed the robbery was Asian, since no race was identified?

Marc, again you bring up race. This is interesting that you mention race every day. What does asian have to do with this story? Do you care what race the drunk fighters were using lethal weapons in the Kappa Alpha house? Did you skip that part of the story? When I hear about drug overdoses and sexual abuse of female freshman on campus I don't think about race. I think about strong disciplinary action for all involved regardless of race.

There's a difference between innocent people repeatedly being robbed on the street and a one-time fight at a frat party that happened behind closed doors.
I'm not concerned about my 60 yr. old mother winding up in a brawl with the boys of Kappa Alpha.

Because it's a trend. The science is called "statistics". I know it's unpopular to discuss in Atlanta.

Fights at southern colleges, particularly between frat dudes, happen on a daily basis...and frankly, they're harmless for the most part. People getting robbed at gunpoint (by the same demographic 99% of the time), in the middle of one of the "nicest" areas of the city doesn't happen daily (outside of Atlanta that is), and it isn't harmless.

The suspect didn't even have a weapon. I wouldn't be afraid of a 175 pound weakling. That kid deserved to get robbed for being such a wimp. I would've broken that guy in half. Six foot one, 175 ain't doo doo.
