Will 'Kool Korner' Be Cool Again?

Moe's Original Bar B Que will open in early March in the renovated Kool Korners on 14th Street.

Update: Moe's Original Bar B Que opened at Kool Korners March 1.

Once a beloved Cuban sandwich shop frequented by Georgia Tech students, the circa-1937 Kool Korners building at the corner of 14th and State streets has been renovated and a new tenant moves in next month.

Moe's Original Bar B Que, an Alabama-inspired barbecue eatery and catering company, should open in part of the building -- a 2,400-square-foot space with an outdoor patio -- at the beginning of March, according to a spokeswoman.

“They have had some delays with the city, so a few things are still in limbo,” spokeswoman Lorrie Dixson said in an email Sunday.

The restaurant, which will have seating for around 80 people, prepares items like pulled pork, ribs, chicken and wings, as well as a shrimp "Moe-Boy" sandwich. There will be a "lively nightlife scene" with a 30-foot bar, high-definition televisions and live music, according to the company.

"We wanted to bring that unique vibe to Kool Korners as it already has a good history with food lovers, and we knew its proximity to the interstate, areas businesses, colleges and residential neighborhoods made it the perfect spot," Moe's co-owner Preston Smith said in a press release.

But can Kool Korners be as cool as it once was?

"They have grande shoes to fill," said Michael Erickson, a 20-year resident of Atlanta and director of marketing for Midtown-based Fifth Group Restaurants.

The building, which was constructed in 1937, has a long history of housing successful eateries. It most recently was the home of a beloved Cuban sandwich shop. Erickson, who ate at the shop, said it was the "best Cuban in town."

"I loved the little old woman who was behind the counter every day," he said.

Ildefonso and Lucia Ramirez, who came to America from Cuba in 1972, opened Kool Korner Grocery in 1985. The couple lived at the store, which gradually transformed into a sandwich shop due to the popularity of the Cuban sandwiches.

Kool Korner became “an icon of Cuban sandwiches for generations of Tech students,” according to sandwich shop’s website. But Kool Korner closed in 2008 when the Ramirez family decided to relocate themselves, and ultimately the shop, to Birmingham, Ala.

Three Alabama natives in 2001 founded Moe's Original Bar B Que in Vail, Colo. Now ten years later, the chain of restaurants is in four states. When it opens, the Atlanta location will be the 18th restaurant in the chain.

"I hope they do well," Erickson said. "It's a shame to see that iconic corner empty."
