Our Midtown Patch Picture of the Day is of the former Hotel Midtown that Noble Investment Group is currently spending $20 million-plus in renovating and rebranding from an independent hotel to a full-service Hyatt. Hotel Midtown, located at 125 10th Street between Peachtree and Juniper streets, had been struggling with occupancy rates and the massive renovation is hoped to give a boost to the hotel originally constructed in the mid 80s. The 194-room Hyatt Atlanta Midtown is set to open in April and will become Hyatt Hotels Corp.’s first hotel in Midtown and Atlanta-based Noble Investment’s …
Today’s Midtown Pictures of the Day were taken Monday afternoon along Ponce de Leon Avenue near Myrtle Street. That’s where 68-year-old Laura Swanagan was spotted walking with a homemade sign draped over her shoulders imploring Atlantans to “Stop the Violence!” “What prompted this is after the children in Connecticut were killed,” said Swanagan, who moved to Midtown five years ago from Jackson, Miss., to be closer to her children. “Everyday you hear on the news somebody has killed somebody. So the Lord said to me, are you willing to be different and go out with a sign on your back and say …
There was a time not long ago that when the moon rose, crazy good times ensued at Loca Luna’s original Midtown location at 836 Juniper Street. The moon set several years on the Loca Luna party and the building that once housed one of Atlanta’s earliest tapas restaurants is almost a memory. An Atlanta favorite, Loca Luna was forced closed on Juniper in 2006 and moved to the Amsterdam Walk district as Novare Group moved in to erect its nearby condo tower, Viewpoint. Now the dilapidated former Loca Luna building along 6th Street between Peachtree and Juniper streets is currently in the process …
Today’s Midtown Patch Picture of the Day is in honor of all those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms while serving our country. Specifically, it is a tribute to Atlanta native and Grady High School graduate, Class of 1962, U.S. Army Captain Merrill Dale Reich, Jr. In the courtyard of the 999 Peachtree building is a marker honoring CPT Reich that was dedicated in 1996 by the Atlanta Vietnam Veterans Business Association on behalf of all who served their country. The inscription reads: To Those Who Fight For It Life Has A Flavor The Protected Never Know Reich was captain of the …
As Midtown Patch reported last week, a dilapidated former residential building at 109 7th Street was scheduled to be demolished. Members of the Midtown SPI-16 & SPI-17 Development Review Committee had recently expressed frustration over not being better equipped in preventing building owners from allowing Midtown structures, such as the one on 7th St., to fall into such disrepair that they needed to be torn down. As can be seen in these Midtown Pictures of the Day, the demolishing process has begun this week. A worker at the site told Midtown Patch on Tuesday that the job should be completed …
Our Midtown Picture of the Day is actually that of a flyer for a Sunday event being held just east of the Midtown boundary. Organized by the Hipster Gardner, Atlantans are planning on gathering Sunday afternoon at Freedom Park to show solidarity with Newtown, Conn. From 12-4 p.m., residents are encouraged to “bring a sign, bring yourself, and bring a friend“ to the intersection of Freedom Parkway and Moreland Avenue to demonstrate that our city cares for those who were so tragically affected by Friday’s mass killing at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Newtown Patch in …
Our Midtown Picture of the day celebrates this week's opening of Midtown's newest hotel, the dual branded Hilton Garden Inn and Homewood Suites by Hilton at 97 10th Street. The hotel is located at the northeast corner of 10th and Williams streets. The 12-story hotel, which boasts 136 Hilton Garden Inn rooms and suites and 92 Homewood studio and one bedroom suites, is owned and managed by Alpharetta-based North Point Hospitality Group, Inc. "We are excited to once again partner with Hilton Worldwide on the first dual branded hotel in Georgia" S. Jay Patel, president and CEO of North Point …
The Atlanta Falcons clinched their fifth division championship over the weekend and at 11-1, the Birds are now focused on laying claim to home field advantage throughout the playoffs. Today’s Midtown Patch Pictures of the Day pay homage to their first division title more than three decades ago when quarterback Steve Bartkowski guided Atlanta to the 1980 NFC West Division crown. "Peachtree Bart" was in Midtown recently helping the local Courtyard by Marriott, the official hotel sponsor of the NFL, host a surprise tailgate party before Falcons-Saints game on Nov. 29. The party at the Courtyard …
Today’s Midtown Patch Picture of the Day comes from the Ansley Mall shopping center where the fast-casual rotisserie chicken restaurant Bantam & Biddy has recently opened. Bantam & Biddy replaced the shuttered juice bar and Philly Cheese Steak shops across from Starbucks located at 1544 Piedmont Road in Suite 301. On Monday, Dec. 3, the latest offering from Yeah! Burger founder Shaun Doty, which has been serving lunch and dinner options centered on locally raised rotisserie chicken and fresh vegetables from the local farmers market, will begin serving breakfast. A menu is included with this …
Here's our Midtown Picture of the Day. OK, we realize that for some of you, this might not be too difficult to detremine where this building is. For others, though, you might be left scratching your head in an attempt to figure out where this picture was snapped on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in Midtown Atlanta. Do you know? Happy Weekend Midtown!
Our Midtown Pictures of the Day were taken on a windy afternoon this past week of The Proscenium building located at the corner of Peachtree and 14th streets. It was here that three men were busily performing their duties as skyscraper window washers on the 25-story building. This is a dangerous occupation, but on this day, all three appeared quite relaxed and were working efficiently. One even took a moment to smile and wave to the cameraman. There is no government licensing for skyscraper window washers in the United States, so anyone can do it. The pay’s decent and you get great views of …
It was a beautiful weekend for a wedding as these two love birds no doubt knew. This shot of the unidentified couple was snapped late Saturday afternoon in Piedmont Park, only a hundred or so yards away from Park Tavern. Park Tavern is home to two distinctly different settings for memorable events such as weddings – the Piedmont Room and Piedmont Garden Tent. At 5,500 square feet, the Piedmont Room accommodates up to 225 guests for a buffet with dancing to follow on the gleaming hardwood floor. The 3,500-square-foot Piedmont Garden Tent comfortably accommodates 175 guests and can be expanded …
Our Midtown Patch Pic of the Day comes with a short and sweet explanation: The Exxon at the corner of Ponce de Leon Avenue and Monroe Drive will soon become a Shell Food Mart. Midtown Patch has received several email requests to gain more info on what is happening at the taped off Exxon service station at 486 Ponce de Leon Ave. Records indicate that Stone Mountain businessman Mehwood N. Sohani, in a change of ownership, is in the process of replacing it with a full-service Shell Food Mart. Requests for further information have not yet been received, but Patch will post here as soon as they …
Our Midtown Patch Pictures of the Day come compliments of photograher David Whitefield from last weekend’s Splish Splash Doggie Bash at the Piedmont Park Aquatic Center pool. The dogs-only swim closed out another summer of water fun while also raising money for the Piedmont Park Conservancy (PPC). How cute is that featured picture?! Want to help PPC? Well, it’s one of 20 organizations selected to participate in the Atlanta Track Club’s Adopt A Marathon Mile Program. The event is being held on Sunday, Oct. 28 and PPC needs 100 volunteers to assist at its official cheer and watering station. …
Our Midtown Patch Pic of the Day showcases one of the neighborhood’s champion for happy times – Baton Bob, the self-proclaimed, Ambassador of Mirth. Since making his return to the Midtown Atlanta streets in mid-May, Baton Bob has again become a fixture around the neighborhood helping turn frowns upside down. He was spotted near the intersection of Peachtree and 10th Street on Wednesday in his full-length white wedding gown, and we thank Kevin Feltner for contributing this shot. What’s your favorite Baton Bob costume? Let us know!
Today’s Midtown Picture of the Day is in fact several pictures taken recently by a Midtown resident. They are more or less ‘before’ and ‘after’ Music Midtown 2012 photographs of Piedmont Park’s meadow area. As happened a year ago, the area was trampled upon by tens of thousands of fans who attended the two-day festival on Sept. 21-22. After the September 2011 one-day Music Midtown, the portion of the meadow near where the stage was located had to be restored and fenced off until mid-spring. The meadow was fairly green two weeks ago as can be seen by these pictures that were taken on Sept. 16…
Today’s Midtown Patch Picture of the Day is something you might have seen this past weekend during Music Midtown at Piedmont Park. Or maybe even did it yourself! The “general” consensus from Music Midtown 2012 was that the entertainment was a hit, but long lines for food, drinks and the ATM were the pits. And the wait to use the Porta Potties, well, they just flat out stunk. Communications to Midtown Patch, as well as those commenting on online message boards, were mostly in agreement that the event’s promoters, Live Nation, neglected to provide enough portable bathroom facilities. At least …
The Midtown Patch Picture of the Day comes from the westside of town where apparently hot blues and cold Jägermeister weren’t the only things being offered by the Northside Tavern today. Friday marked the debut of iPhone 5, the newest iPhone, and fans were in line early at the Apple Store at Lenox Square. Buckhead Patch reported long lines of Apple fanatics looking to get their hands on the device. Were you one of them? Or maybe you spent your day at Northside Tavern, lathering up for Friday night's show featuring the legendary Stoney Brooks. Man, the dude knows how to rock a harmonica. But …
Our Midtown Patch Pic of the Day comes from Atlantic Station, where again this spooky holiday season Halloween Thrills has taken up temporary residence at 1381 Market Street. Halloween Thrills is one of the seasonal stores opening in the metro Atlanta area providing both jobs for the unemployed and the filling of vacant retail locations. With high retail vacancy rates abound, temporary stores, like Halloween Thrills, have found a niche. They come in, pay rent for a couple months and then disappear until the next Halloween season. While not a permanent tenant, these seasonal stores offer a …
