The Rev. Darrion Fletcher says he'll run against Ivory Lee Young, the incumbent Atlanta City Council member for District 3.
Ivory Lee Young, the Atlanta City Council incumbent for District 3, apparently has some competition. The Rev. Darrion Fletcher of Walking Through the Vine Ministry says on his website that he'll run for that seat in the November election. Fletcher's website says he started the ministry to serves the communities of Vine City and English Avenue in the Atlanta area. Young was first elected to the District 3 seat in 2001. The District 3 boundaries that take effect in 2014 include part of Atlanta's westside.

The attorney who was running in District 2 says "I have come to the realization that the timing of my effort is not quite right."
Todd Robinson is withdrawing his candidacy for the District 2 seat on the Atlanta City Council. Robinson, a 32-year-old attorney who lives in Midtown, announced a few weeks ago that he was running. He said in a Tuesday email to Patch: I have informed my supporters that I am withdrawing my name from consideration in this year's Atlanta City Council election. After further consideration and discussions with my family, I have come to the realization that the timing of my effort is not quite right. I will continue to serve my community in many other ways and will re-evaluate public service at a later date. Al Bartell is running for mayor of Atlanta in November, according to his website. Incumbent Mayor Kasim Reed announced last fall he'll seek a second term. Chef Paul Luna also says he's running. Bartell's website says he actually announced his candidacy in November 2010. He calls himself an independent candidate, saying the two-party system hasn't solved any of Atlanta's problems. According to his website, Bartell, 57, grew up in Pamplico, S.C., and graduated from St. Leo University. He says he's previously run for state senator, Public Service commissioner and lieutenant governor.

Another candidate has joined the race for the Atlanta City Council District 2 seat now held by Kwanza Hall. Todd Robinson, a 32-year-old attorney, announced he's running on his candidate website. Jon Jones also says he's running for the District 2 seat. Some of the neighborhoods in District 2 include Inman Park, Poncey Highlands, the Old Fourth Ward and Midtown. Jon Jones says on his website that he's running for the District 2 seat on the Atlanta City Council. Kwanza Hall now holds the seat. Jones' website says he favors "Direct democracy," which he defines as "a form of government in which people vote on policy initiatives directly, as opposed to a representative democracy in which people vote for representatives who then vote on policy initiatives." This involvement would occur through "user-friendly technology, electronic voting will allow every member of District 2 to vote on legislation, author new legislation, or make pleas to the city." Chef Paul Luna is not one to mince words or beat around the subject. He has been an outspoken restaurateur and citizen in the City of Atlanta for years now, and recently decided to make the announcement loud and clear that he is running to be Atlanta's next mayor. Former Atlanta mayoral candidate appointed to help restore professional process controls and integrity within the Fulton County elections process.
In a news release Friday, the Fulton County Republican Party nominated Mary Norwood to its elections board. Norwood, whose support of LGBT issues was a serious aspect of her failed 2009 mayoral campaign, once sued the elections board in 2010 after it prevented her from appearing on the ballot for the Fulton County Commission chair seat after she missed the filing deadline by several hours. The claim was later tossed out by a Superior Court judge. Norwood has been a neighborhood and community activist for the better part of three decades and served on the Atlanta City Council from 2002-2008 before running for mayor. Roderick Edmond, Chairman of the Fulton County Board of Registration & Elections, resigned Friday. A press statement said he will leave as soon as a replacement is identified. Chairman John H. Eaves said, “A change in leadership at this time presents an opportunity to make a fresh start as we continue to address challenges in our Registration & Elections department. We will immediately begin working to identify a replacement.” The Fulton County Registration & Elections department has had issues in the past, losing its chief and being attacked for serious problems and delays in handling recent elections.
