2013 is an Election Year in the City of Atlanta

Atlanta City Council returns from winter recess next week with new 2013 committee assignments.

It’s a new year and an election year to boot in Georgia’s capital as the City of Atlanta General Election will be held on November 5, 2013 and any required General Run-off Election will be held on December 4, 2013. This past November, Mayor Kasim Reed announced he would run for re-election in 2013 and would not be seeking a higher office in Washington D.C. Most councilmembers are expected to run in 2013. In a previous version of this article it was reported that District 1 City Councilwoman Carla Smith would not seek re-election, but that is not correct. Patch regrets the error and has made the appropriate edit. Last July, State Rep. Ralph Long (D-Atlanta) lost to fellow incumbent Simone Bell (D-Atlanta) in the race for the Georgia House …

How Did Midtown Vote on the Charter School Amendment?

The controversial ballot measure passed on Tuesday with 58.5 percent of Georgia voters supporting the constitutional amendment giving the state final authority on approving charter schools, some of which could be operated privately.

Georgia voters gave the state more authority over charter schools this past week in supporting Amendment 1 on Election Day. In Fulton County, there were 244,714 votes cast for and 127,281 votes cast against the amendment. Fill in your precinct code or name to see how your Midtown precinct voted. After several days delay, Fulton County's final, certified election results were updated on the Fulton county website on Saturday and are attached with this story. Before the election, opponents filed a lawsuit to prevent the amendment from taking effect, arguing that the ballot language misled voters about the proposal's intentions. Obama v Romney: Who Did Your Midtown Neighbors Vote For?

President Barack Obama won Fulton County by nearly 115,000 votes Tuesday, which was somewhat smaller than his margin of victory over John McCain in 2008. See how your precinct voted.

According to unofficial results the Fulton County Board of Registration and Elections, President Barack Obama garnered 63.93 percent of the vote from county residents in Tuesday’s election. Mitt Romney had 34.63 percent of the 391,829 votes cast in the county. Several Midtown voters, like others in Fulton County, were forced to cast provisional ballots because their names were somehow missing from the county's registration rolls on Election Day. According to an 11Alive news report, the Georgia Secretary of State's office plans to investigate the Fulton Elections Board following numerous voter complaints on Tuesday. Fulton County polling sites faced a slew of problems: outdated voter registration rolls, broken machines and even power …

Georgia Charter Schools Amendment Appears to Pass

The constitutional amendment grants the state authority to approve charter schools, whether local school boards want them or not.

Georgia voters gave the state more authority over charter schools on Tuesday, passing a constitutional amendment empowering a commission to overrule local school districts that reject charter school petitions. With all counties fully reporting, the hotly contested amendment had support of 58.5 percent of voters. See selected county results below. It was an emotionally charged issue that in some ways united Georgians across political and demographic lines. A Peach Pundit poll from late October had found "no significant difference [in support] based on whether a voter is a Republican or a Democrat, a male or a female, or based on race." Camille Cottrell, an Emory University instructor and card-carrying Democrat, is an example of the …

Barack Obama Re-Elected President

President Obama defeated Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election, according to projections.

President Barack Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan, according to network projections. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you." The Obama campaign won the most expensive presidential race ever, with both parties raising about $2.6 billion. The race was filled with negative campaigning on both sides, from President Obama attacking Romney’s business experience with Bain Capital to Romney lambasting Obama’s handling of the economy. The race tightened during the final months of the…

Mitt Romney Wins Georgia

Voters in Georgia on Tuesday cast their ballot for Mitt Romney, giving him the state's 16 Electoral votes, according to early results.

In a move that fell in line with expectations, Mitt Romney was projected to win Georgia’s 16 electoral votes on Tuesday, defeating Democrat Barack Obama. In the 2008 presidential election, the state voted for the Republican candidate, and since the 1990s has voted for the overall winner of the presidential race 3 out of 5 times. Romney and Obama did not campaign aggressively in Georgia and spent more time visiting the Peach State to raise money. The state has been a Republican stronghold in recent presidential elections.  The economy was a key issue for many voters in Georgia state, which has had a higher than average unemployment rate. Turnout was strong in Georgia and early voting was almost as popular this year as four years ago. …

Most people cannot survive on welfare and food stamps. You cannot pay your mortgage or rent and all of your utilities. I admit that you can "adjust" to having less money, but it's not really a fun place to be. There have always been people who will take advantage of the system, but the increase in costs for these programs is, in a bit part, due to high unemployment. If companies would stop …   more ›

State Looking Into Fulton Voting Problems

Secretary of State says Fulton was not prepared for Election Day.

According to an 11Alive news report, the Georgia Secretary of State's office plans to investigate the Fulton Elections Board following numerous voter complaints on Tuesday. Secretary of State Brian Kemp says the county could face fines for not being properly prepared for the elections. Following the 2008 Presidential election, Fulton faced $120,000 in fines. Sharon Mitchell, Fulton's interim elections director, said in a news conference that Tuesday's problems were not as widespread as in other years. The allegations follow a day when Fulton County sent out several Tweets imploring voters to remain patient and assuring that anyone in line by 7 p.m. would get to vote. At 2:30 p.m., the county sent out the following notice that it was …
