Georgia’s changing climate not only has an effect upon its weather and environment, but also on the public health of its citizens. In Georgia, 15 counties have unhealthy smog levels, and asthma sickens an estimated 239,900 kids and 600,600 adults statewide, according to data from the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). Worsening smog reduces air quality, which is particularly dangerous for people with asthma or other respiratory diseases. In 2011 in Georgia, 11 counties experienced record-breaking heat, 10 counties experienced record-breaking rainfall, and six counties experienced record-breaking snow. According to the NRDC, Georgia doesn’t have a statewide plan to prepare for the health impacts of climate change.
