Vintage images coupled with facts and anecdotes culled by local author Janice McDonald reveal the fascinating history of legendary locals in Intown Atlanta. From the Civil War to the Civil Rights Movement, the people of Atlanta have proven that daring dreams of change can become reality with the support of a welcoming and tight knit community.
“There is no shortage of legendary locals in Atlanta and no shortage of legendary locals in the making,” said author Janice McDonald. The book covers both city greats and unsung heroes like Carrie Steele Logan, who after the Civil War worked as a maid at the railroad depot who also raised funding for Georgia’s first orphanage for black children; Billy Payne, a lawyer and investor who passionately worked with the mayor and got the 1996 Summer Olympics to be held in Atlanta; and Pat Conroy, the renowned writer whose works like The Great Santini and The Prince of Tides have touched countless people around the world.
McDonald is excited to share the new book with locals. “All of those included here have made an impression on countless others and an impact on Atlanta itself. That’s what matters,” she said.
