Wan receives highest grade from Committee for a Better Atlanta

Alex Wan, who is seeking re-election to his District 6 Atlanta City Council seat, garners highest rating of “excellent” from influential group

Atlanta, October 1, 2013 – Alex Wan, a long-time Morningside homeowner and civic leader who is seeking re-election to his Atlanta City Council District 6 post, has received the highest rating of “Excellent” from the Committee for a Better Atlanta. Wan received the highest score among his peers in the District 6 race, and was one of the four highest scorers across all races citywide.

“I am humbled by this recognition,” Wan says. “I am honored to receive this acknowledgment from the CBA, a group of respected members of Atlanta’s business community and civic leaders who recognize my work thus far and the continuing need for experienced, engaged business-minded people as leaders in City government.”

The Committee for a Better Atlanta’s decision is based upon written and oral responses from all candidates in the municipal races. The score is based upon eight key areas, including economic development, transportation and leadership abilities. The ranking of candidates – on a four-tier scale (Excellent, Well Qualified, Average, and Not Qualified) – judges the qualifications of all Atlanta City candidates. Notable CBA members include the Atlanta Board of Realtors, the Georgia Beverage Association and Delta Airlines.

Wan’s score of 93 was the highest in the field of District 6 candidates. One of his District 6 opponents received a “Not Qualified” rating and the other did not participate.

“I want to thank the members of CBA, and my neighbors and friends here in District 6,” Wan says. “I’m happy they affirm the importance of addressing issues like our infrastructure, the efficient delivery of city services and the protection of our unique, safe, livable and diverse neighborhoods. We share the belief that the City’s economic vitality is critical to our ability to keep growing the City’s tax base and reducing the tax burden on homeowners.”

Thus far, Wan also has been endorsed by:

  • Georgia Equality,
  • Georgia Log Cabin Republicans,
  • Georgia Stonewall Democrats,
  • and The Victory Fund.

He is the first Asian American and first openly gay man to serve on Atlanta City Council. Wan is Director of Development for Emory University libraries, and previously served as Director of Development for Jerusalem House, an HIV/AIDS non-profit focusing on housing. Before that, he was a successful entrepreneur.

Raised in Atlanta and a Morningside homeowner for over 19 years, Wan was perhaps best known before his Council win for long-time community involvement, including service on the Atlanta Development Authority (now Invest Atlanta) Board, for which he served as Treasurer and Finance Committee Chair, and as the founder of the successful For the Kid in All of Us, an all-volunteer non-profit.

He holds a Bachelor’s in Industrial Engineering from Georgia Tech and a Finance MBA from Wharton Business School.

City Council District 6 encompasses much of Northeast Intown Atlanta, including Ansley Park, Atkins Park, Brookwood Hills (joins the district 01/01/2014), Candler Park (leaves the district 01/01/2014), Druid Hills, Lindbergh/Morosgo (joins the district 01/01/2014), Lindridge/Martin Manor, Midtown (part leaves 01/01/2014), Morningside/Lenox Park, Piedmont Heights, Sherwood Forest and Virginia-Highland.
