Celebrate a Century of Dancing Arthur Murray Style

A quick glance at where to ditch those mid-week Midtown blues.

Happy hump day, Midtown. Let’s check what’s on the social calendar this Wednesday…and a couple of Thursday items of interest, too.

Wednesday night at the historic , Atlanta’s own Arthur Murray Studios will be hosting the local celebration of a global dance event from 7 to 9:30 p.m.

This energetic and visual event will be commemorating 100 years of dancing Murray, who had his first dance studio in the Grand Ballroom of the Georgian Terrace. April 4 is the founder’s birthday, and ballroom dancing enthusiasts worldwide will be commemorating the beginning of the career that quite possibly remains the most iconic name in ballroom dancing.

Atlanta City Councilman Kwanza Hall will be presenting a proclamation from the city and the Atlanta feed-in for a global video feed will occur at 7:45 p.m.

Arthur Murray International will be linking celebrations through video feed from many of the more than 250 locations worldwide where it has franchise operations. The global dance party will begin in Australia at 4 a.m. EDT, and is an ambitious modern-day equivalent of another Arthur Murray event at Georgia Tech, when he organized the first “radio dance.” Students danced on the roof of the Capitol City Club to a broadcast of “Ramblin’ Wreck” being played by an orchestra on the Georgia Tech campus in 1920.
