Civil War to Civil Rights Events in Atlanta
In commemoration of the Civil War's 150th Anniversary, many Atlanta historical and heritage sites are collaborating on a number of events, lectures and exhibitions that are open to the public.
In an effort to make the history of the Civil War relevant to a new generation of Atlantans by emphasizing the primary outcome of the conflict - the new birth of freedom that was ultimately realized in the civil rights era with the end of segregation- these are just a few of the upcoming events that will be taking place across the city.
Juneteenth Celebration, Atlanta Cyclorama & Grant Park
Join us Friday, June 20, from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. for a Juneteenth Celebration. Two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas to deliver General Order Number 3 informing enslaved African Americans they were free. Upon hearing the news, African Americans started a tradition called Juneteenth, the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. Come to Cyclorama for a day of fun, educational activities, poetry slams and theater as we celebrate this long-standing tradition. Learn More Here
Juneteenth Family Program, Atlanta History Center
On June 21-22, the Atlanta History Center hosts a two-day celebration of Juneteenth focusing on the commemoration of emancipation from slavery in the United States. Guests participate in festivities throughout the campus, including Meet the Past museum theater performances, kid-friendly hands-on activities, storytelling, genealogy workshops, the premiere of The Order of Freedom, and guest speaker Michael Twitty, an African American culinary historian. This year Juneteenth holds special significance during the 150th anniversary of the Civil War and the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Learn More Here

Oakland Cemetery and the Civil War Guided Walking Tour
On June 28, stand at the site where General Hood watched the Battle of Atlanta. Hear the story of the Great Locomotive Chase and Andrew’s Raiders. See the Lion of Atlanta as it lies wounded and dying over unknown soldiers from nearby battlefields and hospitals, and the Confederate Obelisk, at one time the tallest structure in Atlanta. This tour also explores the achievements of famous military leaders and soldiers during and after the war. Learn More Here
