Meet Millie: Cute, Young and Challenged

Millie, a 2-year-old poodle mix, is waiting for someone to adopt her.

Millie had a 102.9 fever when I meet her, but she still smiled with big brown eyes and her tongue hung out as she wagged the nub of her tail.

The previous owners of the 12-pound shih tzu-poodle mix surrendered her at an intown animal control facility. They first said she was a stray, but then admitted that she belonged to them.

Her scraggly, dark hair covered up any signs of abuse until the people at in Midtown went to bathe her.

Judy Price, executive director of the no-kill shelter, said they noticed bone sticking out of her tail and something wrong with her left ear.

Their best guess is that the previous owners put rubber bands or strings around Millie’s tail and ear.

On May 18, Dr. Steven M. Whittle of Paces Ferry Veterinary Clinic had to amputate MIllie’s tail. But he managed to save her ear. More than a week later, she had a fever while getting her bandages changed but otherwise is beyond the worst of her pain.

“She’s a sweet loving dog,” Price said, calling her a great dog for anybody.

Cindy Bryant, a veterinary technician who helped with her surgery, had similar remarks.

After abuse, many dogs take time to recover or hold the harm against other humans. Not Millie. She has seemingly forgot the excruciating pain she suffered and gives kisses to all those that come in contact with her.

She’s already spayed and now is in foster care waiting for a permanent home. She bounces around, and sometimes she hits what’s left of her tail on the ground and seems to miss it.

To adopt Millie, contact Atlanta Pet Rescue by visiting their website or emailing them at info@atlantapetrescue.org. Donations are also being accepted to cover the costs of her expensive surgery. If you’d like to make a donation, email donations@atlantapetrescue.org.

, the sweet pit bull mix, is still in foster care in with Deedra Hemphill.  She now calls him Rocky and says he is adjusting to Midtown life quite nicely. He still needs a permanent home, though.
