Park Drive Bridge to Get Face-Lift

The circa-1916 structure at Piedmont Park will undergo repairs.

The city of Atlanta is repairing the Park Drive bridge, which sits near the dog parks at .

"The bridge is fundamentally very sound but after nearly 95 years some repairs are now being done to patch some damaged concrete and treat exposed re-bar and other metal surfaces," said Chris Nelson, executive vice president and chief operating officer of the .

"The bridge will also be sandblasted," he said.

The structure, which is formally known as the Piedmont Park Boulevard Bridge, began construction in 1916 and was completed in January of 1917, Nelson said.

"The bridge, with an art deco period architectural  design, was built to span the railroad tracks on the eastern boundary and connect Piedmont Park to the new developing neighborhoods," Nelson said. Check out the PDF attached to this article to see the bridge's original design.

"The triangle-shaped island on the west end originally had a fountain in the design and used pavers from Alabama Street, Atlanta first paved street, and incorporated three lamp posts from 1855 that were the first city street lights that are still there today," he said.

C.P. Richards Construction is doing the repair work on the behalf of the city. Construction should be complete by December, Nelson said.

He said the bridge might close to pedestrian traffic but those dates would be announced at a later time.

I usually like architecture from this period, but this poor bridge is a design mess. The central arch is pretty, but the clunky cement structures on both ends ruin the symmetry. I hope the design firm has good enough taste to minimize some of the inherent flaws and improve the overall look of the bridge.
