Racing, Filming Bring Midtown Road Closures

Portion of 10th Street set to be closed beginning Monday at noon

A holiday tradition and Hollywood filming means Midtown area road closures are coming in the days and weeks ahead.

The 2012 AJC Peachtree Roadrace is ready for its annual Fourth of July running next Wednesday as again 60,000 or so are ready to ramble down Peachtree Street and then pour into Piedmont Park during the world’s largest 10K running event.

The event begins in Buckhead near Phipps Plaza and ends near Charles Allen Drive on 10th Street.

For Midtown, it means 10th Street from Charles Allen to Monroe Drive will be closed starting on Monday, July 2 at noon until Wednesday, July 4 at 3 p.m.

Also Monroe Dr. will close between Virginia Avenue and Kanuga Street at 7 a.m. on Wednesday and will remain closed until around noon.

And Peachtree Place will be closed from Peachtree St. to West Peachtree Street at 8 a.m. on Wednesday until noon.

The entire racecourse, which runs south on Peachtree until turning east on 10th St., in Midtown, will be closed by 6:30 a.m. on race day and no private vehicles will be permitted on it. It will reopen on a rolling basis as the race progresses.

Also, “The Internship,” which reunites actors Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson, who last starred together in “Wedding Crashers,” will soon begin filming around Atlanta and Midtown. According to Movieweb, it centers on “two old school salesmen who, finding themselves suddenly unemployed and passed-by in the digital world, try to reinvent themselves by becoming interns at a major tech company.”

Filming will take place at a 9th Street private residence on July 10-11. Prep crews could begin work as early as July 3 and during this time, prep vehicles will park on the southern curb lane of 9th Street between Myrtle Street and Argonne Avenue. This lane permit will extend past the filming dates through July 18.

Additionally, there will some lane and road closures in cooperation with the Atlanta Police Department during the filming dates.

They will include:

JULY 10

- Closure on the southern parking lane of 9th between Myrtle and Argonne.

- Closure on the eastern curb lane of Argonne between 8th and 10th streets.

JULY 11

- Full street closure of 9th between Myrtle and Taft Avenue for exterior filming.

- Closure on the eastern curb lane of Argonne between 8th and 10th.

All homeowners will be able to access their homes and park in their driveways—APD may ask you to wait briefly until the cameras stop rolling, but you will not be denied access to your home.
