The 10th St. Streetscape Project Creates a Park at 10th and Peachtree

The overall project includes installation of new sidewalks, street trees, pedestrian lighting and handicap upgrades.

The 10th St. Streetscape project continues to be in full swing this summer, as the Midtown Alliance Capital Improvements implement their plans from Williams St. to Piedmont Avenue.

The overall project includes installation of new sidewalks, street trees, pedestrian lighting and handicap upgrades.
Midtown Patch reported earlier in the year that, "Midtown Alliance, with the financial support of the Midtown Improvement District (MID), has embarked on a multi-year, $82 million public improvements program for ten major corridors, encompassing more than 25 miles of improvements. The goals of Midtown Cityscapes are to improve sidewalk conditions and traffic flow, add lights and trees, create urban parks and green space, and promote pedestrian usage."

The attached video shows improvements made to a small park that sits on the corner of 10th and Peachtree, where benches and flowers have been installed to help beautify the area that has been vacant in recent years.

The following is an update from the Midtown Alliance at Work

Monthly Construction Update: July 1, 2013

Each month, we provide a construction update on our current Public Space Projects.  See what's happening as we give you more to love about Midtown.

UNDER CONSTRUCTION:

Peachtree Streetscape Improvements: Southern End - This project started in May and will extend the Peachtree Streetscape "pallette" to the southern end of Midtown.  Soon the stretch between 3rd and Pine Streets will be upgraded with new sidewalks, pavers, curbing and pedestrian lights.  Select portions of overhead utility lines will also be relocated underground.  Over the next two weeks, construction crews will be completing work on the east side of the street between 3rd Street and Ponce de Leon Avenue.

Peachtree Streetscape Improvements: Northern End – Now in its final phases, this project extends Peachtree streetscaping to the northern end of Midtown between Peachtree Circle and the I-85 Bridge.   Over the next several weeks, construction crews will be finishing work near the Peachtree Street/Peachtree Circle intersection.

10th Street Cycle Track - The success of the recently-completed Atlanta BeltLine Eastside Trail has increased the already-high demand for bicycle facilities in Midtown.  As a result, we have partnered with the City of Atlanta and the PATH Foundation to implement a dedicated two-way "cycle track" on 10th Street along Piedmont Park.  The facility will connect cyclists between Midtown's core and the BeltLine as well as to future cycle tracks on Juniper Street and Piedmont Avenue.  Phase 1 between Monroe Drive and Charles Allen Drive is scheduled to start construction the week of July 8th with an estimated 3-week construction period.

10th Streetscape (Williams Street to Piedmont Avenue) -  The project includes installation of new sidewalks, street trees, pedestrian lighting, landscaped medians and handicap upgrades between Williams Street and Piedmont Avenue.  Other improvements include a new signalized mid-block pedestrian crossing at the Midtown MARTA Station as well as burial of overhead power lines and poles between Peachtree and Juniper Streets.  Construction crews will continue work on the north side of 10th between Peachtree and Juniper over the next several weeks.

Peachtree Overhead Utility Burial - After being hosted Downtown for several decades, the 33rd Annual Children's Christmas Parade will take place in Midtown for he first time this December.  In anticipation of the event, we have been spearheading an effort to relocate underground all currently-overhead utility lines crossing Peachtree Street.  Our team is currently working on crossings at 5th, 8th and 16th Streets.

RECENTLY COMPLETED:

South Midtown Pedestrian and Circulation Improvements – This $4 million effort included a wide range of improvements along North Avenue and Ponce de Leon Avenue including circulation improvements, streetscape upgrades, creation of new public spaces and installation of key "gateway" features.  Having just recently been completed, final phases included new colored/stamped crosswalks at Peachtree intersections with Ponce and North.

10th Street Temporary Pocket Park (at 10th/Peachtree) – Through a collaboration with Dewberry Capital, we created a temporary “pocket park” corner of 10th and Peachtree Streets.  The new space includes a multi-use lawn, seating areas, pedestrian paths and water-wise plantings designed in partnership with the Atlanta Botanical Garden.  A second phase of park improvements will occur as part of the 10th Streetscape Project.

District-Wide Tree Replacement Program – We recently spearheaded a seasonal effort to identify diseased, dying and missing street trees and replace them with new, healthy, urban-tolerant street trees throughout the entire Midtown Improvement District.  As a result, over 50 new street trees were installed in March.

Spring Landscape Installation - Last month Midtown Green planted new shrubs, annuals and perennials along streets, in medians, and in parks and plazas throughout the District.
