The Atlanta Preservation Center: Sacred Spaces Tour
This series of free tours takes place on Thursday, September 22, Saturday and Sunday, September 24-25. The tour includes six turn-of-the-century, mid-century modern, modern, Christian, Jewish and Muslim sites.
Ahvath Achim Synagogue – Thursday, 9/22, 6-8pm.
Tour with film and refreshments. Built in 1958, this site was designed by Andre Steiner, a noteworthy Atlanta architect and a leader in the Working Group which saved thousands of lives during the Holocaust. Reservations required. Open to all.
Paces Ferry United Methodist Church – Saturday, 9/24, 9am-noon. Sunday, 9/25, 1-4pm - Open House.
Dating from 1896, this church’s one-room design is simple and peaceful. Appropriate for 10 years +.
Al-Farooq Masjid – Saturday, 9/24, 11am. Guided Tour. Established in 1980, this congregation invites you to tour the public and congregational prayer areas. Reservations required. Appropriate for 10 years +.
Big Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church – Saturday, 9/24, 3pm. Guided Tour.
With a congregation dating from 1840, learn about this Atlanta icon that displays “Jesus Saves” atop its Romanesque Revival beauty. Reservations required. Appropriate for 10 years +.
South-View Cemetery – Saturday, 9/24, 4:30-6pm. Guided tour with refreshments.
Religious symbolism abounds at this resting place of important African-Americans who shaped the history and culture of Atlanta. Appropriate for 10 years +.
North Avenue Presbyterian Church – Sunday, 9/25, 1:15pm and 2:15pm. Guided Tour.
This site will bring forth the history of a beautiful sanctuary by highlighting its stained glass made by Louis Comfort Tiffany, Henry Lee Willet and Atlanta’s own Henry Llorens. Appropriate for 10 years +.
