Marsalis' concert is one of several special events in Symphony Hall this season, including Joan Rivers in March.

In a Feb. 6 review of the tour's sold-out stop in Chicago, Tribune reviewer Howard Reich praised the "Vitoria Suite," released last year on a two-CD set, as proof of "Marsalis' growing prowess as musical thinker and orchestrator." Though born of different origins, jazz and flamenco "spoke a single, heated musical language" in the performance.

Under Marsalis' direction, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) will also be performing his third symphony and new arrangements of Chick Corea songs.

Born in New Orleans in 1961 and raised in a musical family, Marsalis has won Grammy awards and a Pulitzer prize in a three-decade career that straddles classical and jazz.
