Margaret Mitchell Film to Air Thursday

Midtown-based Georgia Public Broadcasting to premiere documentary June 30.

"Only Margaret Mitchell could have created Scarlett O’Hara," says Pamela Roberts with Midtown-based . 

That's because the Pulitzer Prize-winning author was a rebel from birth. 

“She was captivating and complex. She took chances every day of her life, and she changed the world with her one book, Gone With the Wind," says Roberts, executive producer, director and writer of a new film about the author's extraordinary life.

In honor of the 75th anniversary of the novel, Georgia Public Broadcasting has produced Margaret Mitchell: American Rebel. The hour-long documentary will premiere June 30 at 8 p.m.

The film features commentary from leading writers such as Pat Conroy and Pearl Cleage -- as well as biographers, historians and family friends.

Some scenes re-enact Mitchell's childhood. Roberts based them on Mitchell's personal letters.

The film will "reveal a complex and mysterious woman ... who struggled with the two great issues of her day – the changing role of women and the liberation of African-Americans," says Georgia Public Broadcasting.
