Summer Scene at Emily Amy Gallery

West Midtown gallery owner is getting creative to attract the crowds.

Hazy blue mountain landscapes and misty river valleys hang on the walls of the in West Midtown. It's a cooling refuge from the suffocating heat outside.

Throughout the summer, the art scene at Emily Amy Gallery will be thriving. The gallery -- located in the Brickworks development on Marietta Street -- will exhibit a group show called Summer Salon that focuses on new artists as well as new works by existing artists at the gallery.

Curator Emily Amy plans to hold series of community-focused events this summer at the gallery, including the continuing  hosted by the Westside Arts District, which Amy directs.

In the past, events such as a pancake breakfast and children’s art activities have brought people to the space. Amy said she hopes to attract a new customers this summer, especially tourists travelling to the Westside to check out the new developments.

  • An Evening of Art for the Vanderbilt and Georgetown Alumni Associations (Amy is a Vanderbilt graduate)
  • Fashion Trunk Show with Les Nouvelles
  • Mimosas, Coffee and Croissants for local interior designers
  • Getaway with a Gallerist: An art, food & wine experience
  • Art Walks on June 18, July 16 and Aug. 20

The curator said artwork sales have declined because of the economic downturn in recent years, which has compelled gallery directors to combine efforts in order to provide art the public wants. If a customer walks into Emily Amy Gallery and cannot find the type of painting he's looking for, Amy said she will ask a nearby curator to check her inventory for a suitable piece.

“Gallerists are being more proactive to get the community involved,” Amy said.

The gallery's collection tends to focus on abstract expressionism and minimalism. Artists are pulled from all over the country. Amy said prices vary. There are affordable pieces for the newlywed couple as well as the accomplished collector.
