The Food Commons Re-Envisions How SW Atlanta and Beyond Gets Their Food
The Food Commons represents a vision of a common food system
In today’s world, everyone is aware of the food crisis here in American cities. Unlike some third-world countries where food is scarce, here in American cities the problem is that good, healthy, whole foods are becoming harder to find while processed junk foods are abundantly everywhere.
According to a statement, “The Food Commons has developed an alternative path by re-envisioning a re-creation of the local and regional food systems that preceded the current global industrial food systems.” The organization is accomplishing this by utilizing community-based organizational and economic models, the science and practice of sustainable agriculture and the changes in culture and demand.
The Food Commons (FCAT) model functions through the activities of three key components the Food Commons Hub, the Food Commons Financing Arm, and the Food Commons Trust. FCAT will acquire the physical assets to produce, process, and market local food products, and lease this land or facilities to participating small farms and businesses at affordable rates.

The aim of FCAT is to create opportunities for small food enterprises that otherwise may not have access to such assets.
