Atlanta City Limits Population Remains Stable Since 2000

The city of Atlanta’s population changed less than 1 percent over the last decade, according to figures released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau.

A total of 420,003 people currently reside inside Atlanta city limits, including Midtown. That’s an increase of 3,529 people from 2000’s figure of 416,474, or 0.8 percent. Atlanta’s home county of Fulton remains Georgia’s largest, with a population of 920,581 and a 12.8 percent growth rate since 2000.

African-Americans continue to be a majority in the city, with 226,894 residents compared to 161,115 whites. Latinos account for 21,815 residents, along with 13,188 Asians.

Growth rates for metro Atlanta’s other counties include Gwinnett, with a population of 805,321 (increase of 36.9 percent);  DeKalb, 691,893 (increase of 3.9 percent); and Cobb, 688,078 (increase of 13.2 percent).
