This post was reported and written by Ralph Ellis.

The Brookwood Interchange off the Downtown Connector has been named in honor of an Atlanta police officer struck by a car at that location.

The Saporta Report reported that state Rep. Pat Thomas, a Democrat from Morningside, introduced the legislation that named the interchange after Officer Gail Denise Thomas.

Thomas, 46, died Jan. 24, 2012 while working a car wreck at the interchange of the Downtown Connector and exit 251. Cascade Patch reported that a large number of police officers attended her funeral.

"I challenge you though as you sit here today, do not mourn for Gail Thomas, because Gail is all right," Maj. Christopher Leighty, APD's Zone 5 commander and Thomas' former boss at Zone 3, told the congregation.

"Mourn for our loss and the fact that world is a little less bright because of the loss of her physical presence in our life. We may not see her but she will forever be in our hearts and in our actions."

The Saporta report said the driver who struck Thomas pleaded guilty to  vehicular homicide and failure to obey the directions of a police officer. She was sentenced to 16 years imprisonment.
