Candlelight Vigil for the Uninsured

Candlelight Vigil for the Uninsured

ATLANTA, GA  -- On November 16, 2013, Health Students Taking Action Together, Inc. (HealthSTAT) will honor those who lost their lives due to lack of insurance by holding a candlelight vigil on the steps of the Georgia state capitol.

Nearly two million Georgians – or 20% of the state’s population-- are uninsured and more than one thousand Georgians die each year due to uninsurance. Although the implementation of the health insurance marketplace in October will help to insure some of those two million Georgians, there will still be roughly 500,000 Georgians who will remain uninsured because Georgia has decided not to expand Medicaid.

HealthSTAT believes that Expansion is aGood Deal, and hopes to shine light on the issue of uninsurance and the importance of Medicaid expansion with their Candlelight Vigil for the Uninsured. Experts believe that expanding Medicaid could prevent up to 3,700 deaths of Georgians each year. Join HealthSTAT on November 16th to help honor those who lost their lives and call on our state’s leaders to act now and expand Medicaid.

Candles will be provided. Banners, signs, and other personal memorials are welcome.
