Circa 50 by Gathering Wild dance company

New work by Gathering Wild

dance company is inspired by the 1950s

Circa 50 premieres Jan 24 – 25 at 14th Street Playhouse

Seeking to explore more than stereotyped1950s clichés like teens in poodle skirts, Elvis and the hula hoop, Gathering Wild’s newest multi-media dance performance digs deeper.

Circa 50 – a series of provocative reflections on the cultural relevance of the ‘50s – premieres January 24 and 25, 2014 at the 14th Street Playhouse in Midtown Atlanta.  Both performances begin at 8:00 pm.Gathering Wild’s artistic director Jerylann Warner intends to “shine a light on oppressed emotions seething below the surface” and other issues of the day such as the isolation of housewives in suburbia.  Circa 50 examines many themes including race, censorship, the role of women in a patriarchal world and living the American Dream consumed by consumerism.  Warner also brings a genuine empathy for the period.

The 14-person dance ensemble performs to original scores as well as ‘50s classics by Frank Sinatra, Chuck Berry, Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline and others.
