Project TurnAround Welcomes White House Official to Free Healthcare Seminar for LGBT Community

Mr. Gautam Raghavan, President Obama’s associate director of
Public Engagement and White House liaison to the LGBT community, will join
Atlanta-based Project TurnAround Foundation for a free seminar on the
Affordable Care Act March 9 in Atlanta.  The non-profit organization has invited
Raghavan and other healthcare professionals to discuss how the new health
insurance options could impact members of the LGBT community (Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual and Transgender).  The seminar
will be held Sunday, March 9 from 4-7 p.m. at the Georgian Terrace Hotel, 659 Peachtree Street, Atlanta, Ga., 30308, and
is free to attend.  More
information is available at www.ptfga.org.

“There are many healthcare issues that specifically affect
the LGBT community, and insurance plans can differ greatly on what procedures
and medications they cover,” said Cindy Bowden, interim director of the Project
TurnAround Foundation.  “For instance,
the patient’s cost for HIV medications can vary significantly from plan to plan.  Other questions to ask include whether or not
transgender surgeries and hormone therapies are covered, and what might be
considered a pre-existing condition.
Project TurnAround Foundation is bringing together experts for this free
program including doctors, pharmacists and insurance experts to review options
and answer questions.  We’ll also have
medical personnel from Grady Hospital available to conduct stroke screening and
blood pressure measurements and professionals from AID Atlanta to do confidential HIV testing.  Attendees can also be tested for STD by
representatives of NAESM, and volunteers will be on-hand to help those who are
interested to sign up for one of the new Affordable Care plans.”

 In addition to Raghavan, speakers
will include Molly Brown, field organizer for the Get Covered America Campaign;
Brigid Scarbrough of The Health Initiative; and Jeff Graham, executive director
of Georgia Equality.  Topics to be
covered:
