During this year’s A-TOWN DAY I am proud to be representing the Heart Rhythm Society and Association of Black Cardiologists “Arrest the Risk” Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) Awareness Campaign. To help raise awareness around this issue, which kills more people each year than breast cancer, lung cancer and AIDs combined, at 1:50 p.m. I will be providing helpful information on SCA and how it is impacting the African American community.

Responsible for more than 350,000 U.S. deaths each year, SCA occurs when the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating. Approximately 95 percent of SCA cases result in death; however, it is proven most deadly in African Americans.

If you can’t make it, you can learn more about the difference between SCA and a
heart attack, in addition to taking a personal risk assessment, at www.arresttherisk.org. The assessment asks you to think about your own personal health, as well as your family members and can help you have a better, more informed conversation with your doctor.

This year’s A-TOWN DAY will benefit The Booker T. Washington High School of Health, Science and Nutrition and the B-AWARE Foundation. Come show your support and learn about the importance of heart health in our community!
