'Atlanta Streets Alive' Rolls Out on Sunday, Some Roads to Close

Multiple local streets will close temporarily this year during the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition’s “Atlanta Streets Alive” events. During the series, Atlantans are encouraged to trade their four-wheeled vehicles for bikes and their feet to increase foot traffic, and promote sustainability and healthy living. The series kicks off this Sunday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Historic West End Trail.

The idea for the series stems from Bogotá, Columbia, where 70 miles of streets are closed to cars from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Sunday. More than 80,000 people participate each week, according to the Atlanta Streets Alive website.

About 15,000 people are expected to participate at the Sunday event in Atlanta.

While local businesses along the route will remain open and some will participate in activities, no outside vendors will sell goods, the Atlanta Business Chronicle reported.

“Atlanta has all of the tools to become a top city for cycling,” Mayor Kasim Reed said in a statement. “It’s through events like Atlanta Streets Alive that we are able to envision our city’s potential to embrace active modes of transportation.”

The following streets will be closed to cars from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday:
-Ralph David Abernathy Blvd (from Langhorn St SW to Murphy Ave SW) all lanes
-Murphy Ave SW (from Ralph David Abernathy to Lee St Connector) all lanes
-White St SW (from Peeples St to Lee St SW) all lanes

The next Atlanta Streets Alive event is May 18 on Peachtree Street.
