Taking Your Dog on Summer Vacation And LifeLine Animal Project's Pet of the Week: Nugget

Summer vacation provides a great opportunity for you to spend more time with your furry family member.  If your pet is travelling with you by car this summer, here are some tips to keep him happy and safe:

  1. Bring some comforts from home.  Pack your dog’s own bedding and toys, so she’ll have a few familiar items with her.  Also, don’t forget food and water bowls, a container of water for the car ride, leash, medications (if applicable) and a well-stocked first-aid kit.
  2. Quell nausea.  If your dog gets motion sickness in the car, call your veterinarian to find out if anti-nausea medicine will work for her.
  3. Keep anxious passengers calm.  Similarly, if you have an anxious rider, your veterinarian can give you sedatives to keep her calm while driving.
  4. Protect your pet.  Be sure to use a dog harness/seatbelt, so that your dog is restrained in case of an accident.  This will also prevent her from jumping around the car, or dashing out when the door is opened.
  5. Keep your dog relieved and hydrated.  Your dog can’t tell you when she needs to ‘go,’ so don’t forget to stop every few hours for potty breaks.  Also, offer your dog water during this time.
  6. Plan for the unexpected.  Even with precautions, your dog can slip out and get lost.  Make sure that your pet is microchipped and wearing proper identification before she gets in the car.

Now that you know how to make dogs comfortable while traveling, why not adopt one to travel with?  How about our Pet of the Week?
