Want to lower Your Risk of Cardiovascular Disease? Then Get a Pet!

The leading cause of death in the United States is cardiovascular disease, according to the American Heart Association.  Over 60 percent of American adults are overweight or obese, and heart disease is the leading cause of death in Georgia.  However, the simple act of owning a pet may reduce the likelihood of developing heart disease.

The American Heart Association’s Circulation journal, reported on May 9, 2013, that pet ownership not only creates a healthier lifestyle with more physical activity and lowered stress levels, but has also been shown to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels as a result.

Since shelters are most crowded during the summer, now is the perfect time to adopt a pet.  And if you can’t make a permanent commitment, consider fostering a pet.  Doing so will free up shelter space for another animal and allow you to experience the benefits of pet ownership without the lifelong commitment.

Whether you’re interested in a dog or cat, puppy or kitten, Fulton County Animal Services (FCAS) has plenty to choose from.  All cats are half price this month, and one of them is named Chrissy.

FCAS Pet of the Week:  Chrissy

Chrissy is a one-year-old, gorgeous tabby cat with very pretty green eyes. She has been at the shelter for 2.5 months and desperately needs a home!  Although she was found as a stray, she is far from feral or unsociable. She is super sweet and loving, but wants all the attention, so she needs to be your only cat.  Chrissy’s adoption fee, including being spayed, microchipped, and receiving all vaccines is only $32.50!  Please consider adopting or fostering one of the great animals waiting for homes at FCAS!  For more information, please email Kerry at: kmoyershorton@fultonanimalservices.com or call her at (404) 613-9157.
