Good day to help ACFB and Hands on Atlanta

Outstanding West Midtown non-profits do so much for so many, but Tuesday they're asking for a little help themselves.

A pair of West Midtown non-profits – the (ACFB) and Hands on Atlanta -  are asking for your help today.

Founded in 1979, ACFB, located at 732 Joseph E. Lowery Blvd., currently distributes more than 30 million pounds of food and other donated grocery items each year to more than 700 nonprofit partner agencies in 38 counties in Metro Atlanta and North Georgia. Tuesday, though, the group needs help in making sure elected leaders know how important hunger-relief programs are to you and to your community.

In an open letter,  ACFB Director of Advocacy and Education Laura Lester writes:

The Senate Agriculture Committee is set to release its Farm Bill over the next several days and we need to make sure that their bill protects and strengthens critical hunger-relief programs.  Additionally, we have learned that Representatives Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) and John Garamendi (D-CA) are leading a “Special Order” on the floor of the House of Representatives tonight, April 17th, to oppose the House Budget cuts to food stamps/SNAP and other nutrition programs. This Special Order is a good opportunity to build public awareness and support for SNAP.

Millions of Americans all across the country are struggling to put food on the table. With unemployment expected to remain above 8 percent this year and long-term unemployment still at record highs, programs like food stamps/SNAP and TEFAP are more important than ever. Your Senators and Representatives need to hear from you TODAY. We hope you can take a moment to call and help us demonstrate how important hunger-relief programs are to your community.
