Check It!: Week of August 6-12

A weekly roundup of all things music in Atlanta. This week: Phillip Phillips' single hits gold, Mac Powell releases a solo album, Blair Crimmins wins a huge gig and Cas Haley comes to town.

Phillips Phillips Hits Gold

Phillip Phillips, the Leesburg, Ga., native who won American Idol in May, has had a bit of the spotlight in the Olympics this summer. His first single “Home,” became the theme song for the U.S. women’s gymnastics team, and both the team and the song have won gold. “Home” has officially been certified gold, gaining a boost in sales thanks to its playtime during the Olympics.

Phillips and the rest of the American Idol crew are currently on tour throughout the country. He’s also working on his debut album.

The album is officially set to drop Aug. 21, but a limited release is available on Powell’s website now.

Blair Crimmins Opens for Mumford and Sons

Up-and-coming Atlanta band Blair Crimmins and the Hookers has gained a lot of local success lately, becoming known for its Vaudeville gypsy rock sound and great stage presence.

That recognition will soon move beyond the Atlanta scene; the band was chosen to open for (the very popular and trendy) Mumford and Sons at its show next week in Columbus, Ohio.

When Cas Haley won runner-up on the second season of America’s Got Talent, he could have walked straight into a multi-record deal with a major label. But the idea of losing control over his music bothered Haley. Since his television appearance, the reggae-rock artist has worked on a number of reggae compilations and released two albums, one independently and one with Easy Star Records. Haley’s currently raising funds through PledgeMusic to release a new album and is continuing his collaboration work with Easy Star All-Stars.

Haley rolls through Atlanta this Saturday, playing a late night show at Smith’s Olde Bar. You can get tickets for $12 in advance here.
