Check It!: Week of July 16-22

A weekly roundup of all things music in Midtown and Atlanta. This week features: Music Midtown, Little Tybee, The Black Lips, and Blair Crimmins

Music Midtown Announces Schedule

has added three exciting acts to its already stellar lineup including Foo Fighters, T.I., Pearl Jam, Florence and the Machine, Girl Talk and The Avett Brothers. The lineup now also features:

  • Garbage: The alt-rock sometimes post-grunge band lead by Shirley Manson recently released its first album since reuniting in 2007. The new album, “Not Your Kind of People,” came out in March, and the band is now touring behind it through North America, Europe and Asia.
  • Neon Trees: That catchy “Animals” song you keep hearing everywhere? It’s by Neon Trees. The up-and-coming band earned a lot of radio time from the song, off its debut album “Habits,” and the success is continuing with “Everybody Talks” off “Picture Show,” which was released this April.
  • Adam Ant with The Good The Mad and The Lovely Posse: Adam Ant, formerly of New-wave group Adam and the Ants, has worked as a music artist and actor since the 80s. Ant is known for his highly danceable pop music…and for dating Heather Graham.

The schedule for the two-day festival has also been announced. Check it out here.

Little Tybee Members Lose Home

Three members of orchestral pop band Little Tybee lost their home in East Atlanta in one of the wild storms that ripped through the area last week. A fallen tree left significant damage in the roof, and now much of their music gear and belongings are ruined.

Paper Garden, the Brooklyn, N.Y., record label that represents Little Tybee, has set up a relief fund in the three members’ behalf.

Little Tybee is currently on tour throughout the country, and will be playing at the Earl next Tuesday.

Black Lips Plan Middle Eastern Tour and Documentary

Atlanta punk rock band The Black Lips is not exactly what you’d call conservative. So of course, The Black Lips’ tour through culturally conservative countries in the Middle East is something that needs to be documented.

Producer Bill Cody, who helped make the “Athens, GA: Inside/Out” documentary, is looking to raise funds to chronicle the band’s adventures. You can donate to the cause here.

Check It! Pick of the Week

Blair Crimmins and the Hookers will transform the Earl into a 1920s Vaudeville theatre this week. The Atlanta-based group brings its Louisiana-flavored ragtime and blues to the stage Friday, July 20, with singer-songwriter Adron and “gothic Americana” band Lily and the Tigers.
