Check It!: Week of September 17-23

A weekly roundup of all things music in Atlanta. This week: CeeLo spreads the holiday cheer, A3C announces lineup, Creative Loafing throws a birthday bash, Grizzly Bear comes to Atlanta.

CeeLo Shows His Holiday Spirit

Atlanta musician CeeLo Green certainly hasn’t been taking it easy as of late: starring as a celebrity coach on the singing competition show “The Voice,” starting a green education foundation, voicing a character for the upcoming cartoon movie “Hotel Transylvania” and…releasing a Christmas album?

“CeeLo’s Magic Moment” is set to drop Oct. 30 and will feature renditions of all the classics—“Silent Night,” You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch” and “White Christmas”—performed by CeeLo and guests that include Rod Stewart, B.o.B. and Straight No Chaser.

If the album art is any representation of the music, then we listeners are in for an interesting take on our favorite holiday songs. The cover shows CeeLo wearing a long white fur coat in a red Rolls Royce convertible being led by reindeer, exactly like a modern day Santa.

A3C takes place in Atlanta each year, bringing together hip hop artists, filmmakers, engineers, producers, emcees, breakdancers and industry leaders for a weekend of panels, competition and live performances. The 2012 festival takes place Oct. 11-13.

Creative Loafing Turns 40

Creative Loafing is celebrating its 40th birthday this Wednesday with a bash at Goat Farm. The music lineup features Arrested Development, Adron, Gun Party and The Wheeler Boys with Joe McGuinness. There will also be DJs and gloATL will be doing something with the Atlanta Opera.

Come early for complimentary sparkling wine and treats. Advance tickets are available here or you can get them at the door.

Check It! Pick of the Week

Atlanta happens to get folk rock band Grizzly Bear in town the day before the release of its newest album “Shields.”  Last week, “Shields” was leaked on the Internet and was also featured on NPR’s “First Listen.”

The band just made the trip back from touring Europe; the South marks the beginning of a month long U.S. tour before it heads back overseas.

Grizzly Bear will play today at the Tabernacle. The show starts at 8 p.m. with opener Unknown Mortal Orchestra, an indie rock group from Portland, Ore. Get tickets here.
