The Buggs Edition 4: Larry’s Favorite Beatles Songs

Larry Harrison, member of The Beatles tribute band The Buggs, talks his favorite Beatles tunes. Check out The Buggs at Friday Night Live at Atlantic Station this week. They go on at 7 p.m.!

Larry Harrison is what you’d call a true Beatles fanatic.

Harrison, who happens to play the George Harrison role in The Beatles tribute band , can’t pinpoint his favorite of The Beatles’ extensive catalogue.

The Buggs is set to play Friday Night Live this week, its fourth show at Atlantic Station this summer. Local Notes has been running highlighting each of The Buggs member’s five favorite Beatles songs.  Harrison said he could never pick just five.

“To ask someone like my comrades in The Buggs or me to pick a favorite song is a real mind squeeze for us, for we are such involved fans and have been so submerged in their music that we have built our own musical styles out of experiences growing up with the Beatles as mentors,” he said.

Harrison’s love for The Beatles started at an early age. He said a school friend who had The Beatles’ first album introduced him to the group and had him fill in harmonies while they sang along. It wasn’t long until he was a devoted fan.

“The sound of us hitting those ‘From Me to You’ harmonies had me hooked, and then the Ed Sullivan Show put the knock out punch on me,” he said, referring to the famous performance that set the stage for The Beatles’ success in America.

As far as the songs that stick out in his mind most, Harrison says it all depends on his mood.

For a time of heavy thought, he prefers songs like “She’s Leaving Home” or “Eleanor Rigby.” His favorite songs on the melodic pop end of the spectrum include “Penny Lane,” “Here Comes the Sun,” and “Fixing a Hole.” As The Beatles entered the later years, “Paperback Writer” and “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” let Harrison “just plain rock.”

“To us Beatles junkies, merely asking for a favorite song throws us into our own psyche and starts tangling our imagination with the idea that there may have to be one favorite,” Harrison said.
