The Years Play Modern Rock as a ‘Unit’

Atlanta band The Years will play this week's Friday Night Live in Atlantic Station.

For many musicians, inspiration comes from within, and their songs are mediums for the expression of their inner feelings.  Josiah Falco is one of those musicians.

“It has a lot to do with your mood that day, your current life experiences,” he said about songwriting.  “Sometimes, you just start playing and before you know it, you write a song.”

For Falco, music is in his blood; he takes after his father, who tried to make it as a musician in the Seventies.  When he started playing with a then-co-worker, violinist T.J. Fisher, the two hit it off and formed their band, The Years.  After some lineup changes, the band now consists of Falco, Fisher, lead guitarist John Hanson and drummer Andrew Guy.

Falco said The Years’ sound is based on classic rock and R&B with a modern, alternative edge.  The guys worked on an EP in 2010 called “Keep Moving” and are looking at recording a full-length album soon.

For now, they’re focused on performing.  A few months ago, The Years played at Apache Café, a Midtown music club that Falco said has a particularly discerning crowd.  The crowd really dug The Years’ sound, he added, and the band fed off its energy.

“When people feel it, it makes music better,” Falco said.

In much the same way, the guys feed off each other when making music and are “constantly evolving,” Falco said. The biggest challenge for many bands is keeping all the members motivated and on the same page, Falco said, but added that hasn’t been a problem in his band.

“We are a unit, and our unit’s getting tighter,” he said.

The Years is set to play this week’s Friday Night Live in Atlantic Station, a free concert series in Central Park, at 7 p.m.
